TWENTY-ONE countries in Asia-Pacific have agreed to rush the negotiation of the Free-Trade Area of the Asia-Pacific and proposed each country ratify the agreement by the end of this year.

The announcement came out of the recent meeting of Apec trade ministers.

After leading the Thai delega?tion to the 22nd Apec Trade Ministers Meeting in Arequipa, Peru, Vice Minister for Commerce Winichai Chaemchaeng said in light of the Bogor Goal ending in 2020 Apec members had agreed they needed to speed up the free-trade agreement so the pact could be implemented next year for pro?moting trade growth among Apec countries.

Apec members are studying the strategic agreement and providing suggestions so that the FTAAP can be submitted to the leaders of each country for ratification at a Apec meeting at the end of the current year.

Apec countries have also discussed a measure to promote the development of small and medium-sized enterprises to penetrate world markets so SMEs can continue to drive economic growth for Apec countries.

Under the measure, Thailand informed Apec member states that it had a national agenda to promote SMEs development, and shared its experiences with other Apec members to help develop their SMEs.

SMEs have been encouraged to adopt e-commerce for promoting their trading in international markets.

The United Nation awarded Thailand the World Summit of Information Society prize in 2015 for smart online SMEs. As such, the Kingdom has shared its experiences related to online SMEs, Winichai said.

Apec trade ministers also agreed that they must support the finalisation of the Doha Round of talks for the World Trade Organisation soon so that trade would be more liberalised worldwide.

Thailand had a sideline meeting with each Apec member state at the trade ministers meeting, including South Korea, Japan, Russia, Australia, New Zealand and Peru, to exchange opinions and experience on the Trans-Pacific Partnership to help Thailand with its decision on whether to join the pact.

Thailand also asked South Korea to open its market for Thai frozen chicken and Mahachanok mango exports.

Two more Apec meetings will be held this year – the Senior Officials of Apec Meeting in August, and the Apec Leaders Summit in November.
