Ratchanok into quarters as Thais culled

RATCHANOK Intanon had to draw on all her experience to vanquish 2017 World Junior badminton champion Gregoria Mariska 21-11 17-21 21-14 to reach the Indonesia Open quarter-finals in Jakarta yesterday.
The world No 4 took the opener comfortably but then lost her concentration and relinquished the second game. Back against the wall in the decider, she summoned up her full repertoire of shots to tame the 18-year-old rival after an hour’s play.
The Thai No 1 next faces South Korean seventh seed Sung Ji-hyun who had a much easier time taking care of Canadian Michelle Li 21-11 21-14.
In the men’s singles second round, Thai No 2 Kantaphon Wancharoen easily picked off Hans-Kristian Solberg Vittinghus of Denmark 21-18 21-11.
| While Ratchanok and Kantaphon advanced, other Thais were shown the exit. Busanan Ongbamrungphan lost to eighth seeded He Bingjiao of China 21-15 21-12. In women’s doubles second round, Jongkolphan Kititharakul and Rawinda Prajongjai fell to Mayu Matsumoto and Wakana Nagahara of Japan 21-14 21-18. |
Earlier, Dechapol Puavaranukroh and Sapsiree Taerattanachai went down to Ricky Karandasuwardi and Debby Susanto of Indonesia 21-14 21-19 in mixed doubles second round.
