CLEAN REPORT CARD ON DIGITAL CHANNEL ADS
The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) found that there were no inappropriate advertisements aired for health supplements and cosmetic products on terrestrial digital TV channels over the past two weeks.
This suggests that the concerted efforts by the NBTC and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to crack down on such advertising on the digital TV network has paid off, NBTC commissioner Peerapong Manakit said yesterday.
However, the regulators still found a number of offending ads on the satellite TV and social media channels.
From June 4-8, their joint monitoring of advertising on all TV and social media channels found that 13 satellite TV channels aired a total of nine advertisements for supplements and cosmetics that carried misleading information.
In the same period, they also identified advertisements on the Internet that breached the standards, contained in 50 URLs.
In total, they found offending advertisements on 160 URLs over the past five weeks. The NBTC has asked the Internet service providers to remove them.
The NBTC and the FDA have since May 4 worked closely to remove scores of inappropriate advertisements from digital, satellite and cable TV networks and social network channels. Most of the ads were for health supplements and cosmetic products that carried misleading claims.
Both agencies have recently expanded the reach of a joint crackdown on inappropriate advertising to cover the community radio network.
CORRECTION
In a report headlined “Portugal drives for increase in Thai investments”, published on 3B on June 9, it should have been stated that Minor group of Thailand operates hotels in Portugal under Tivoli, Anantara, and Avani brands, not Six Senses.
