Ahead of today’s meeting to resolve the prolonged management conflict at Assumption University (Abac), the institute’s alumni expressed concern that the problem, especially after violent confrontations, would tarnish the reputation of this prominent Bangkok university.
An alumnus who asked not to be named said the December 30 confrontation – which erupted after self-proclaimed acting rector Sudhiporn Patumtaewapibal and his supporters were barred by security guards from entering the Hua Mark campus – should not have occurred.
He said he was now worried that more confrontations might stem from the conflict, and hence the university should deal with the situation more effectively.
Another alumnus said he was disappointed with Sudhiporn’s group, as they took action against rector Brother Bancha Saenghiran based on little evidence.
Both sides are slated to table possible solutions at the meeting today and reach an agreement.
Education Minister General Dapong Ratanasuwan last week gave an ultimatum for Abac to find solutions or he would have to invoke Article 86(4) of the Private Higher Educational Institution Act to create a committee to run the university.
