MOST of Assumption University’s former university council yesterday urged Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha and Education Minister Dapong Ratanasuwan to review the order setting up an ad hoc committee to take control of Abac, as the university is known.
The university has been embroiled in a protracted management dispute.
The order was issued under Article 86 of the Private University Act.
Udom Hongchatkul, president of the AU Alumni Association and representative of the 12 former members of the 17-member council, told a press conference that the group was saddened by the invocation of Article 86, as this could ruin the institution’s reputation and set a non-constructive precedent for the process of checking a private university’s administration.
The group will appeal to Dapong in 30 days.
“It is also too soon to tell if we can trust the Abac-controlling committee. They have just started working. “We are looking up legal references because we aren’t sure if Abac’s case falls within the framework of Article 86,” he said.
They will also see if the exercise of this law conflicts with the civil court’s temporary injunction regarding Sudhiporn Patumtaewapibal’s appointment as the acting president.
