Workers place concrete barriers to block an old petrol station in front of Bangkok’s Saphan Phut Market yesterday as part of the city administration’s decision to re-regulate this market and nearby Pak Klong Talad Market. The workers got into an argument

Disgruntled Pak Klong Talad Market vendors showed up yesterday with several pick-up trucks to protest against the blocking up of an abandoned petrol station near the market area that they used as a parking lot. Though some 20 protesters argued with city workers, who at the time were putting concrete blocks in the area, the situation did not escalate.

Bangkok governor’s chief adviser Wanlop Suwandee, deputy permanent secretary Jakkapan Phewngarm and Phra Nakhon District Office director Somchai Traipitayakul also showed up to talk to the protesters at around noon.

After talking to some five protesters’ representatives, Jakkapan told reporters that the 400 square metre area being blocked was being used as a parking lot and some people were even collecting illegal parking fees. He quoted Wallop as saying the area could not be used for extended parking, though people could stop for 15 minutes to drop off goods. The vendor’s representatives said they will get back with a response in three days.

The vendors of Pak Klong Talad and nearby Saphan Phut Market have been told by the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration to move out by February 29 as part of a landscape improvement plan.
