THE ANTI-MONEY Laundering Office (AMLO) has frozen assets totalling about Bt300 million of a former senator, his company and accomplices for alleged embezzlement.
Secretary-general of AMLO Seehanat Prayoonrat said that Loei Teachers’ Saving and Credit Cooperative Ltd and its members had filed complaints with his office alleging that Srisuk Rungwisai, a former selected senator, and his firm Tevasitthi Pikanet convinced the cooperative and its members to buy government lottery tickets, plus charity lottery tickets.
Srisuk claimed he got a big concession from the Government Lottery Office (GLO) at a good price.
The cooperative and its members, plus those of certain other cooperatives, believed and allegedly gave him the money to buy the lottery tickets.
However, Seehanat said inquiries showed that Srisuk and his company had not won either contracts or a quota from the GLO to sell the tickets.
Srisuk allegedly could not provide the lottery tickets as promised, Seehanat said. Other cooperatives alleged to have been embezzled by Srisuk included Loei Saving Cooperatives and Wang Sapung Agriculture Cooperatives.
Srisuk then made the same promise with other people – that anyone who bought lottery tickets from him could sell them and pocket Bt10 each from the difference. A large number of people were lured to buy the tickets, but Srisuk was allegedly unable to do this.
So, Seehanat said an AMLO sub-panel decided to freeze his assets according to the anti-money laundering laws – about 100 items, including 92 land title deeds in Nakhon Sawan and Samut Prakan provinces, as well as a condominium in Bangkok. The total assets frozen were valued at about Bt300 million.
Seehanat said his office also froze the assets of the Community Enterprise Network of Thai Agriculturists for allegedly deceiving people and farmers with a “bogus promise” so that they opened accounts with the Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives.
An investigation into the network was implemented after the bank noticed an unusual number of people opening accounts. The network, Seehanart said, was found to have no business to return money promised to people. Note: please explain or clarify the last sentence.
