Peerapong Saichua, permanent secretary of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA), said half of the drowning cases happened at natural water sources, followed by swimming pools and bathtubs. He said that in order to avoid this, parents should teach children how to swim and keep a close eye on them, especially during the “most risky” period between noon and evening. He also said lids or fences would be installed as well as warning signs be put up at different water sources. The BMA has also set up the 1646 hotline for people seeking help in cases of drowning.

Thailand has seen 10,923 children drown from 2006-2015, while 192 children under the age of three drowned mostly in water containers at home or nursery per year from 2011-15, according to the Disease Control Department.
