THE Nation Bike Thailand ride in Yala yesterday attracted 5,500 cyclists from the three southernmost border provinces in the highest turnout in three years.
The 31-kilometre bike path started in the inner city and passed the province’s landmarks and tourism spots such as the old city, Pattani River, colourful commercial buildings and Khuhaphimuk Temple.
“The success of this activity can be attributed to those who joined riding, making an impressive phenomenon for bike riding in the deep South,” said Adisak Limprungpatanakit, chief executive officer of NBC.
“This reflects the local administrative agencies’ efficiency even though the area is seen as not safe due to the unrest.”
Pongsak Yingchoncharoen, mayor of Yala city municipality, said the bike ride received good feedback from local people as well as cooperation from local administrations, police and the military, resulting in the large participation.
“Yala also opened the eyes of people outside the province to see what a serene and beautiful place it is,” he said.
People lined both sides of the roads used for the route, waving in encouragement at the bikers cruising by. Cyclists also came from Pattani and Narathiwat.
