THE GROUNDWATER Resources Department (GWD) has launched an investigation into alleged irregularities in its 2014 project to seal groundwater wells.

“If any official is found guilty, they will face disciplinary punishment,” GWD director general Supot Jermsawatdipong said yesterday.

He spoke one day after the Centre for National Anti-corruption Commission announced that there were grounds to suspect that nearly 100 officials might have engaged in corruption during the implementation of the Bt103 million project in the 2014 fiscal year.

Supot said the GWD sealed 4,886 groundwater wells that year because they had become defective or had too little water for use.

“We will cooperate with the Office of the Public Sector Anti-Corruption Commission [PACC] in investigating further the alleged irregularities,” Supot said.

He said the GWD would provide all documents to facilitate the probe.

PACC board member Pol General Jarumporn Suramanee said his probe had found several fake receipts for reimbursement of the project’s budget.

He added that his team had inspected groundwater wells that had been reported as “closed” in several provinces and found that the closing process fell short of prescribed standards.
