Many participants travelled from upcountry to join this cycling parade in Bangkok.

“I am here because I am his loyal subject,” a yellow-clad cyclist said. Yellow is the colour associated with the king’s birthday.

The Physical Education Department staged the event to mark the 70th anniversary of the king’s accession to the throne. HM Bhumibol Adulyadej, the world’s longest-reigning monarch, ascended to the throne on June 9, 1946. Throughout his reign, he has made great contributions to his country and has worked with dedication for his people.

The cycling route started from the National Stadium, went past various landmarks such as Democracy Monument and the Emerald Buddha Temple, before finishing at the National Stadium.

“We have staged the event to mark the auspicious occasion so that people can come together and express their loyalty and well wishes to His Majesty the King,” Physical Education Department deputy director general

Panya Hanluamyuang said. The participants sang the royal anthem and saluted the King during the event.

Panya said the event also promoted the benefits of exercise.

“Our cycling route is also full of important sites,” he added.
