THE niece of a Private allegedly beaten to death was granted bail yesterday in a defamation case brought against her by an Army captain.

Narissarawan Kaewnopparat is the niece of Private Wichien Pheuksom who died in 2011.

Captain Phuri Pheksophol had on December 18, 2015 sued the administrator of the “Samnakkhao La Long” Facebook page as well as Narissarawan for posting slanderous information.

Officers from the Narathiwat Police Station showed up at her office on Tuesday with an arrest warrant over charges of defamation and violating the Computer Crimes Act.

Pol Col-General Pattanawut Angkanawin, Narathiwat Provincial Police chief, told the press that an arrest warrant had been issued against her on February 16 by the Narathiwat Provincial Court.

Pattanawut explained that the arrest warrant was a result of Captain Phuri’s complaint. The prosecutors took up the case on March 20.

Phuri was the commander-in-charge when Private Wichien was beaten to death for allegedly deserting the Army. Narissarawan, meanwhile, said that she was not worried about the allegations against her because she was innocent.

“I expected the other side to file a case against me, but I did not expect the police to suddenly show up and arrest me. I never received any summonses to hear the charges,” she said.

“I insist on my innocence because I did not post any libellous comments online and I am in no way involved in the Samnakkhao La Long Facebook page. Hence, I will fight against all allegations to clear my name and sue the person who is suing me.”

As for the summons that she never received, she said police had told her that they did send a summons to the address on her national ID, and a person signed when he or she took receipt of it.

Narissarawan went on to say that her lawyer will write a defence letter to the police within 30 days as per the justice procedure, though police insisted that she will have to show up in Narathiwat again on August 20 to provide more information.

As for progress in her late uncle’s case, she said investigators from the Public Sector Anti-Corruption Commission had made a lot of progress and that there will be a lot of good news, though she would wait for the verdict.
