“Such use of restraints violates both human rights and human dignity,” the NHRC said in a statement yesterday.

The students, who are affiliated with the New Democracy Movement, were arrested while campaigning against the charter draft that won more than half the votes in Sunday’s referendum.

They were accused of violating both an order by the National Council for Peace and Order banning gatherings, plus the referendum law.

After their arrest, they were taken to the Military Court in Bangkok wearing ankle shackles, and many media outlets published pictures of them in their restraints.

All seven students have been freed.
