The funeral for Jongkolnee Phumkrajang, 51, killed in front of the Surat Thani Marine Police office, was held at Wat Pho Nimit yesterday.

Jongkolnee’s daughter Ajjima Saenyakorn, 25, and son Kampanart Saenyakorn, 22, tearfully noted that they were the sole family members, as their mother had raised them alone since Ajjima was two.

“That morning [of the attack] I asked my mum what she wanted to eat later for National Mother’s Day but she said it was OK because she needed to rush to work first and said we would cook something to eat together when she returned [home],” Ajjima recalled. “Then I got a phone call that my mum died in the bombing. I was shocked and didn’t know what to do.”

She said she had avoided looking at images of the bombings on Facebook because it would be too painful.

“If you lost your mum on National Mother’s Day, how would you feel?” she said to those behind the attacks.

“Now I think my mum is resting and feeling no more pain while people she loved sent wreaths for her funeral, including Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha and veteran politician Suthep Thaugsuban.”

The family will hold the cremation ritual for Jongkolnee on Wednesday.
