In an apparent murder-suicide, a border patrol policeman shot dead a colleague inside their outpost in Narathiwat’s Waeng district yesterday morning before turning the gun on himself, police said.

Following the 8am incident in Ban Yaliting Moo 8 in Tambon Loh Jud, police found the body of Pol Corporal Pongthep Khamphai, 28, with a gunshot wound to the head. He had a 9mm pistol next to him.

His colleague Pol Sergeant Major Nirut Sukbua, 34, was rushed to Waeng Hospital, where he was pronounced dead from a single gunshot to the head.

An initial investigation has found that Pongthep allegedly used his pistol to shoot Nirut in the head and then shot himself to avoid punishment. Police are still investigating the motive behind this.
