Authorities are trying to return notorious convicted murderer Major Chalermchai Matchaklam to jail after he was accused of violating the terms of his probation by intimidating a businessman.
Chalermchai was initially sentenced to death for killing a provincial governor in 2001, but his sentence was commuted to life imprisonment and then to 20 years in jail.
After he served more than 15 years, he was released on parole last year.
Recently police received a complaint from a gem trader that Chalermchai had threatened him and forced him to sign an unfair contract.
“This businessman has provided audio and video clips to back his claim that Chalermchai resorted to intimidation,” Probation Department director-general Pol Colonel Naras Savestanan said yesterday.
He said his department had already alerted the parole committee about Chalermchai’s case.
“We have proposed that the Corrections Department chief require Chalermchai to serve the remainder of his jail term,” Naras said.
The Justice Ministry’s deputy permanent secretary Kobkiat Kasivivat said yesterday that if it was proven that Chalermchai violated the terms of the parole, he would have to spend two years and nine months more behind bars.
“He won’t be able to deduct 11 months of his parole period that he has already enjoyed from the remainder of the jail term,” Kobkiat said.
