Bangkok roads were hit with traffic jams yesterday morning after torrential rains overnight caused flooding in several parts of the capital and near many schools.
Saint Joseph Thiphawan, Rajvinit Bangkae and Assumption Samut Prakan schools in Samut Prakan province cancelled classes yesterday, while Sri Nakarin and Sukhumvit roads were congested for kilometres due to flooding.
As of 6am yesterday, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) flood prevention centre announced that city workers had managed to drain all 27 affected areas, which were hit by flooding 20 to 30 centimetres deep since 10pm on Wednesday night.
Affected areas included Din Daeng Road in front of Soi Sutthiporn, Ngam Wong Wan Road in front of Pongphet market and Ratchadapisek Road.
The centre also reported that Prawet district’s Klong Prawet Burirom Sluice Gate area near Wat Krathum Suapla was the worst hit area with up to 160 millimetres of rainfall followed by Lat Krabang district with 140 millimetres and Huai Kwang district at 138.5 millimetres.
As Bangkok and its vicinity were hit by more thundershowers last night, the BMA announced that it would lower the water level in Klong Saen Saeb by one metre to the lowest level possible to facilitate floodwater drainage.
City staff urged commuters to adjust their travel plans accordingly because the move would affect boat transport services.
In Pathum Thani’s Klong Luang district, overnight rainfall triggered flooding on Paholyothin Road yesterday resulting in severe traffic jams.
In Phichit’s Muang district, low-lying areas were hit by flooding as deep as 80cm in Tambon Hua Dong, resulting in several residents using boats to move belongings and animals to higher ground.
Rainfall since Wednesday night has resulted in flooding in many low-lying areas of Chiang Mai‘s Muang district, including the Chiang Mai College of Dramatic Arts area, Huai Kaew Road and the Chiang Mai Civil Service Office Complex area.
The Thai Meteorological Department yesterday forecast that thundershowers with isolated heavy rain would persist across the country and warned people in Chiang Mai, Lamphun, Lampang, Tak, Sukhothai, Kamphaeng Phet, Uttaradit, Phitsanulok, Nakhon Nayok, Prachin Buri, Phangnga, Phuket, Krabi, Trang and Satun of severe weather conditions.
