DEPUTY POLICE chief General Srivara Rangsipramanakul yesterday announced that the investigation into the spate of bomb and arson attacks in Prachuap Khiri Khan and six upper Southern provinces this month, which killed four people and injured more than 30 others, was 50-per-cent complete.

Srivara said investigators would apply for arrest warrants for suspects wanted over the Trang bombing, adding that police would not only use witness testimony to apply for warrants but also had details from the suspects’ ID cards.

He said the attacks were linked and the probe would not reach a dead end.

Srivara said Hua Hin bomb suspect Russalan Baima, a 35-year-old from Songkhla, would be charged with attempted arson and carrying an explosive device without permission.

An arrest warrant was issued for Russalan on Wednesday.

He said police had solid evidence against Russalan, who is reportedly a sympathiser of the deep South insurgency and is believed to be hiding in Thailand since the attacks.

Srivara said police were also gathering evidence against Sakkarin Karuhat, a suspect in an arson attack in Nakhon Si Thammarat province, but added that there was no need to detain him because police could summon him if necessary.

Nakhon Si Thammarat Military Court on Tuesday rejected a police request for an arrest warrant for Sakkarin on charges of possessing explosives, arson and planting a bomb in connection with the fire at a Tesco Lotus department store in Nakhon Si Thammarat.

Trang CCTV footage

Meanwhile, police released CCTV images of two suspects who with two others allegedly planted bombs at the Centre Point afternoon market on Ruenrom Road and Lee Mart department store in Trang’s Muang district.

The two men were spotted wearing normal clothing, caps and wristbands sitting in a tuk-tuk on the afternoon of August 10 at Trang Bus Station, and then disembarking at Thammarin Intersection before heading to Lee Mart where they allegedly planted a fire bomb and left by the back door.

The pair then reportedly reunited with the two others at a local mosque.

Earlier it was reported that the four suspects travelled to Trang in a van from Hat Yai before they separated in pairs to board tuk-tuks to travel to the two sites.

Ruenrom Road reportedly did not have operational CCTV cameras so there was no footage of the two men who allegedly planted the explosive at Centre Point.

The bombing at Centre Point occurred in the evening of August 11, resulting in one death and many injuries, while no one was injured in the fire at Lee Mart in early morning of August 12.∝
