Former prime minister Thanin Kraivichien has been named as president of the Privy Council, replacing Prem Tinsulanonda, who is now Regent pro tempore, Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Krea-ngam said yesterday.
Thanin, 89, took charge in accordance with Section 25 of the 2007 Constitution, Wissanu said.
The new chief of the Privy Council, which is the advisory body to the king, is a legal expert. He was selected as the 14th prime minister of Thailand, holding office between October 1976 and October 1977.
His Majesty the King appointed him to the Privy Council after he stepped down from the premiership in 1977.
