BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN – Economic discussions between Brunei and the Guangxi province in China will likely intensify in the coming few months, the chairman of the Brunei Economic Development Board (BEDB) said yesterday.
Dato Paduka Dr Hj Mohd Amin Liew Abdullah said that a number of potential Chinese investors from Guangxi will be visiting Brunei soon as part of a follow-up from their visit to Guangxi a few months ago.
“The next few months is going to be quite intense,” the chairman said in brief comments to The Brunei Times. BEDB is the primary agency dedicated to attracting foreign direct investment into Brunei.
The Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, known as an important gateway between China and Asean, has set up a joint-agreement with Brunei to establish the Brunei-Guangxi Economic Corridor which aims to see over $500 million worth in joint investments.
“There are a number of interesting projects we are looking at so hopefully we will be able to attract them to come and invest in Brunei,” said Dato Hj Mohd Amin, who is also the Deputy Minister of Finance.
He added that they will also be following up with a Brunei delegation heading to the China-Asean Expo at the end of September, which is also being held at Guangxi.
In his opening remarks during the inauguration of the Chinese Enterprise Association in Brunei (CEAB) yesterday, Dato Hj Mohd Amin highlighted that they see great potential to attract more investments from Chinese companies as China continues to provide support and incentives for those companies to invest overseas.
One such initiative was the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road. “As one of the countries along the maritime silk road, we will work closely with our Chinese partners to use Brunei as a central point of the BIMP-EAGA region to build connectivity between the two countries,” he said.
The chairman yesterday said that they will also continue to work with their Chinese partners to make use of Brunei as a center for the consolidation of raw materials in the region and also as a centre for manufacturing and distribution of products to the regional countries.
“There are also many more opportunities in the areas of Halal production, ICT and agriculture and tourism which we hope our Chinese partners will continue to explore in Brunei.”
