Putrajaya – The public should not get carried away with the issue of civil claims filed by the United States Department of Justice (DOJ) because the truth will prevail sooner or later, said Prime Minister Najib Razak.
Najib said those named in the claims must take responsibility and clear their name, adding that the Government would ensure no government funds were abused.
Among those named in the cliam announced by US AttorneyGeneral Loretta Lynch are Malaysian businessman Low Taek Jho, better known as “Jho Low” and Najib’s stepson Riza Aziz.
The others named include Abu Dhabi government officials,
“We hope that sooner or later, we will know the truth,” Najib said when presenting offers to perform the haj to 1,100 village heads and village committee members sponsored by the 1MDB Foundation.
The Prime Minister said the Government viewed seriously the civil claims filed by the DOJ to seize more than US$1bil (RM4.07bil) in assets allegedly siphoned out of 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB). It also plans to seize assets in Singapore, UK and Switzerland.
Dream come true: Najib posing for a photograph with village heads and village committee members after presenting them with offers to perform the haj sponsored by 1MDB Foundation in Putrajaya.
“Let us allow the process of law to take place. Let us not be carried away and let us go about our business as usual.
“The Government will give its full cooperation in investigations on 1MDB,” he added.
Najib said despite heavy criticisms, 1MDB played a significant role in many social and peoplerelated programmes, from repairing dilapidated homes of the poor to helping fishermen, youth and women, as well as during disasters.
The company has also been sending Muslims to perform the haj since 2011, with close to 5,000 pilgrims sent so far. This year, RM10mil will be spent for that purpose.
Najib said efforts to strengthen 1MDB’s position would continue.
“With a stronger 1MDB, it will be able to commit to more social programmes to help and benefit the people,” he added.
