YANGON – The city’s government has agreed to rebuild the fire-ravaged Mingala market, with construction work expected to take about 18 months, Hla Htay, the MP for Mingala Taungnyunt has said.
The Markets Department of the Yangon City Development Committee (YCDC) announced that most shop owners had voted for reconstruction when consulted on May 16. “The regional government will invite open bids to rebuild the market,” the MP said.
The YCDC temporarily moved shop owners to the fifth floor of the Shwe Mingala market but they said trade was not good there, Hla Htay said. No starting date was given for the construction work. “The fifth floor of Shwe Mingala market is not good for business,” an unnamed trader said.
Mingala market burned down in 2010 and 2015 with more than 1,600 shops destroyed in last year’s blaze.
