The Appeals Court has delivered a guilty verdict and handed down a lengthy prison sentence for a former member of the Satun Provincial Administration Organisation who played a role in detaining and extorting Rohingya victims.
The court jailed Anat Hayeemasae for 22 years and six months.
Anat was convicted of kidnapping Rohingya people who were forced to live in a border camp under his control until their relatives paid ransoms. Last year, a lower court convicted Anat of trafficking.
The Appeals Court, however, allowed Rohingya victims to become co-plaintiffs in the case against Anat. Initially, victims were not allowed to join as co-plaintiffs because the lower court interpreted human trafficking as a crime against the state. The Appeals Court ruled on the case on October 20.
