POLICE ARE seeking cooperation from Chiang Mai late-night entertainment venues in enforcing anti-crime measures.
“All stakeholders must play a role in ensuring safety and boosting tourists’ satisfaction,” Provincial Police Region 5’s acting chief Pol Maj General Poonsap Prasertsak said yesterday at a meeting with more than 200 representatives from entertainment venues.
At the meeting, participants were briefed about relevant laws and how to efficiently install security cameras.
Poonsap pointed out that with proper measures, tourists would have greater confidence in visiting Chiang Mai and tourism would in turn spur the province’s economy.
The senior police officer cautioned entertainment-venue owners against focusing only on profits and said they should also consider society, peace and compliance with laws.
Poonsap said they were seeking “constructive partnerships” and he expected staff to alert police to any suspicious activity.
He also cautioned security guards at late-night venues to comply with proper procedures.
“Do not assault others no matter what, not even when some problems occur,” he said.
The Malin Sky pub in Chiang Mai province made headlines a few weeks ago after a young man accused its security guards of beating him up on the orders of their influential boss.
The alleged victim, a son of a senior military officer, has lodged a complaint with police.
“Such an assault should not have taken place because it damages Chiang Mai’s reputation and hurts its tourism,” Poonsap said.
