Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha and the chief of Malaysia’s armed forces met at Government House yesterday to ensure continued effort to find a solution to end the long-running insurgency in the deep South.
General Zulkifeli Mohd Zin Zulkifeli highlighted Malaysia’s role as facilitator in the peace process, citing the high-level committee consisting of officials from relevant agencies of both countries including security, Deputy Government Spokesman Lt-General Werachon Sukondhapatipak said.
Zulkifeli also reiterated Malaysia’s desire to continue to work closely with Deputy PM and Defence Minister General Prawit Wongsuwan.
Prayut thanked Malaysia for its facilitating role in the peace process while assuring that Thailand would continue to be committed to solving the insurgency through peaceful and participatory means.
The Malaysian general met with Prayut as an official guest of the Thai Armed Forces. Zulkifeli will soon also serve as secretary-general of the Malaysian National Security Council.
Meanwhile, a member of the Cambodian National Assembly and president of the Union Youth Federations of Cambodia, Hun Many, yesterday led young leaders to meet Prayut at Government House.
Reaffirming relations between the two neighbouring countries, Prayut said the young leaders’ visit was in line with the Thai government’s agenda to focus on human resource development to enable progress of the Asean Community.
