PRIVY COUNCIL President Prem Tinsulanonda yesterday welcomed Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha, Cabinet members and senior officials to his home, where he greeted them for the New Year and acknowledged their “tiring” services to the country over the past few years.
This is the first time since completing his duty as Regent that Prem has opened his residence to receive any group in a relaxed atmosphere.
Prayut led the group, saying they had come to pay their respects on the occasion of the New Year, adding that everyone attending looked up to Prem for his honesty, knowledge, experience and loyalty to the monarchy. They also wished him good health, symbolically conferring on him the blessings of all sacred elements in the country, including the good deeds of Late King Rama IX and His Majesty King Rama X.
Prem responded with thanks and complimented the group for working hard. He said he was glad to see that everybody had worked tirelessly to serve the country and that he trusted they would not capitulate.
“I’m glad that you are helping one another work for the country with good intentions, working hard to make Thai people happy. These may not be beautiful words, but it’s a strong promise that you have given yourselves, the nation and to everybody in this country,” he said.
He also called on Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwan and other deputies to provide full support to the prime minister and urged them to continue working hard.
“It’s a great thing that one allows oneself to get tired working for others and the nation. I will keep monitoring you and give you moral support. I once told a senior police officer in Dusit Maha Prasat Throne Hall that I know you are tired, but if you feel tired, just look at the picture of the late King. He worked hard for the past 70 years and was tremendously tired and we must follow what he did,” Prem said.
He then took time greeting some Cabinet members personally, including Agriculture Minister Chatchai Sarikulya, before having a 15-minute discussion with the premier.
After the discussion, Prayut said Prem had asked him about the work plans for next year, but did not address any particular issues in relation to the road map.
Prayut said the government should follow the steps laid out and that next year would be “the year of reform”, adding that work on reform has already begun after a preparation committee had been set up.
The National Reform Steering Assembly has proposed 138 reform agendas, which will be reorganised with the main purpose being to empower people at the grassroots level, Prayut said, adding that community-based work would be promoted to boost local economies.
When asked if he minded having to work harder and becoming more tired, he said, “Yes, that’s next year. I’m still here and feel I will have to get more tired.”
