Bangkok’s CCTV cameras, which have been primarily used for traffic control, will be utilised more effectively to fight crime, according to the Bangkok Metropolitan Authority (BMA).
The move was initiated as three government agencies Thursday signed a memorandum of understanding.
CCTV footage will be linked and used in crime prevention in line with a Cabinet resolution calling for the state, the private sector and the public to cooperate to reduce crime.
BMA deputy permanent secretary Pichai Kriengwatanasiri said the city’s CCTV system had proved useful in arresting criminals.
Pichai said the tens of thousands of CCTV cameras across Bangkok would be used to prevent crime and gather evidence.
The BMA has also arranged for officials to jointly patrol with police at-risk areas to reduce crime and to monitor screens at the CCTV centre to alert police of crimes without waiting for victims to file complaints.
Interior Ministry representative Norapat Plodthong and the Justice Ministry’s Office of Justice Affairs head Wanlop Nakbua also attended the signing event.
