Networks of hilltribe people will travel to Bangkok to submit a petition to Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha and the National Council for Peace and Order to ask for justice and a fair investigation into the soldiers’ killing of a young Lahu man.
Representatives of the Network of Indigenous Peoples in Thailand and 33 networks of hilltribe people gathered in northern province of Chiang Mai and read out a declaration stating the extrajudicial killing of Chaiyapoom Pasae, 17, shocked them.
Soldiers have claimed that they acted in self-defence as Chaiyapoom was about to throw a hand grenade at them.
“Chaiyapoom was a nice guy and had been active in activities that promote rights of youths and disadvantaged people.
He did not like violence and sacrificed himself in organising activities for the communities of stateless children. He was a role model for others,” the declaration read.
In Chiang Mai gathering, they called for a fair investigation and justice for the young Lahu man who was shot dead by soldiers during a drug-related investigation in Chiang Mai province last week.
They have not yet revealed when they would come to Bangkok.
