The chairman of the National Reform Steering Assembly, Alongkorn Ponlaboot, on Saturday urged all sides having heated exchanges over the ongoing reconciliation efforts, including the chairman of the political reform committee, to cool down so that the overall atmosphere was not spoiled.
NRSA political committee chief Seri Suwanpanon this week tossed up an idea, following his committee’s resolution on the issue, of a conditional amnesty. This generated heated feedback from both top government figures as well as political party representatives, including those from the Democrat Party.
Alongkorn said the country is trying to achieve reconciliation and all parties should try not to spoil the atmosphere or trigger further conflict.
The government-initiated reconciliation committee, under the supreme committee on reform, reconciliation, and national strategy, has gathered views from over 70 political parties and groups and would synthesise all the proposals into a social contract that would aim to end the long division that has lasted for more than a decade.
