Several reformers have submitted their resignation letters to the National Reform Steering Assembly (NRSA) as they said they wanted to prepare for the coming election.
The election, if it takes place, could happen late next year. The term in office of the NRSA members is due to end in July following the promulgation of the new charter, but many have already submitted their resignation letters.
Among noted politicians comprising the political reform committee who have resigned are Sompong Srakavee and Suchon Chaleekruea of Pheu Thai Party, Nikorn Chamnong of Chart Thai Pattana, Damrong Pidech of Tuang Kuen Puen Pa (Thai Forest Land Reclamation) Party and some others.
Sompong said he would not return to Pheu Thai, but would form a small party with some NRSA members as he was among the reformers who had proposed political reform, and he wanted to implement it in his new party.
Sompong insisted that his aim in setting up the party was not to support the military, although he was ready to be its alliance partner.
The new charter requires them to resign from their posts within 90 days after promulgation of the charter if they wished to contest in an election. The deadline is July 4. The resignation letters would become effective from July 1, and more members are expected to hand in their resignation letters.
