Singapore’s Yeo Workshop is hosting the exhibition “Story of Space”, featuring the socio-political work of Indonesian artist Maryanto, from March 28 to May 31.
“Story of Space” assembles elements from his previous exhibitions “Space of Exception” (2015 at Yeo) and “Mineral Desire” (last year in Hong Kong).
Maryanto’s drawings, paintings, sculptures and installations examine environmental exploitation and its political consequences. He believes landscapes are rich in “untold narratives” and aims to safeguard them through detailed visualisation.
His art serves as a form of storytelling, giving the sense of a theatrical stage or even a landscape setting.
His stories explore and transfer knowledge through historical research and myths combined with the artist’s imagination and constructed forms. The results are dramatic and romantic black-and-white installations built of paintings, etchings and charcoal drawings.
The subject of his ongoing project, which commenced several years ago, is his curiosity about resources and their effect on a country and its politics. Maryanto is able to compare and explore the history of colonialism and its role in the allocation of resources.
He sees “resource” as a Pandora’s box – that a country with abundant resources could suffer tension and conflict among its government systems and in the daily lives of the people.
Yeo Workshop is at the Gillman Barracks on Lock Road in Singapore. Learn more at http://www.YeoWorkshop.com.
