POLICE INVESTIGATION into the robbery of an ATM in Bangkok using a bomb is now more than 90 per cent complete, officials said yesterday.
“We will bring the culprit to justice. But we can’t disclose more details at this moment,” Wat Phraya Krai Police Station Superintendent Pol Colonel Ratchapon Chanasrikachorn said yesterday.
His revelations came after information suggested that the prime suspect in the robbery, which took place outside a Tesco Lotus outlet in Saphan Sung district early Wednesday, fled the scene on a motorcycle and then abandoned the vehicle on Chan Road.
This road is under the supervision of the Wat Phraya Krai Police Station.
An informed source revealed further that the suspect then flagged a taxi for a ride to the Pakkret Pier in Nonthaburi province.
“Police have already interviewed the taxi driver, who said he knew nothing about his passenger’s plan,” the source said.
The same source added that relatives described the suspect as a reserved and quiet person.
“Police believe he might have fled alone,” it added.
After blasting open the ATM, the suspect successfully made of with its moneybox that contained more than Bt300,000 in cash.
Recordings from closed-circuit television cameras in nearby areas suggest that the robber fled the scene via Krungthep Kreetha Road.
“The robber used a dark-coloured motorcycle,” an informed source revealed. “From the road, he entered Soi Krungthep Kreetha 23.”
Metropolitan Police Commissioner Pol Lt-General Sanit Mahathavorn confirmed that police had received clues about the escape routes.
So far, he said, it had not been possible to retrieve any information from the ATM’s security camera because it had sustained damages in the bomb blast.
“We will recruit the help of experts to see if we can extract crucial information from this camera,” he said.
