The number of people visiting the Dusit Maha Prasart Throne Hall at the Grand Palace in Bangkok to pay their final respects to His Majesty the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej has topped 11 million.

The queue remained long outside the Throne Hall on Tuesday as the final day nears for viewing the Royal Urn.

The Grand Palace will be closed to the public on September 30 so that final preparations can be made for the late King’s funeral from October 25-29.

The queue on Tuesday morning reached the Khok Wua Intersection near Khao San Road.

The Royal Household Bureau on Monday reduced the number of screening points for visitors to just two – one in front of the Royal Rattanakosin Hotel and the other at the Ror Dor roundabout opposite Wat Pho.

Visitors are screened to make sure they are suitably attired and respectful.

The bureau announced that, as of Monday, 11,260,388 people had visited the Throne Hall since October 18 last year.

It said people had donated Bt834.2 million in memory of the late monarch. On Monday alone, 64,436 people donated Bt4.7 million.
