Baht weakens

The baht opened at 31.01 to the US dollar this morning (June 15), weakening from its previous close of 30.98.
The Thai currency is expected to move between 31.90 and 31.10 today and between 30.75 and 31.25 this week, said Jitipol Puksamatanan, head of Markets Strategy at SCB Securities.
He said the baht this week would move in a narrow range due to positive and negative factors over Covid-19, economic data, and financial policies.
Chinese economic data announced today signalled that its economy is recovering, especially in industrial production, which rose by 5 per cent compared to the same period in 2019.
On Thursday, the Swiss National Bank and the Bank of England will hold their meetings. Jitipol estimated the central banks would not change their interest rates – at 0.75 per cent and 0.10 per cent, respectively. He expects the banks to exercise quantitative easing policies.
Jitipol advised investors to monitor the US’s initial jobless claims, which could be more than a million.
He also believed the dollar would become less weak after talk of a possible second coronavirus wave.
In Thailand, the baht stayed at 31 per US dollar as investors were concerned the Bank of Thailand would issue policies to control capital inflows.
Jitipol said this concern would fade if foreign investors do not invest in Thailand’s risk assets.
In the middle term, the baht would continue to strengthen as Thailand’s imports were expected to be lower than exports, he added.
