Yangon – MP Win Oo from Yayphyu constituency in Tanintharyi Region submitted a proposal to raise the age restriction on car imports.

At present, Myanmar nationals aged over 18 years old are allowed to import cars.

The MP proposed to allow only people over the age of 25 to import cars.

The MP also suggested that the parliament set up car-parking facilities to ease traffic jams and reduce restrictions on buyers who have bought new cars from showrooms. He also raised a question about whether the government plans to begin importing left-hand drive cars or not.

“Do people have enough income to buy a car at [at 18]? Do they pay income tax? Now, the government allows people to import cars if they pay income tax. However, the government should increase the minimum age to 25 years old. There are many car showrooms and sales centres in Yangon, and [younger people] can buy cars from there. They don’t have to import cars.”

He said Myanmar has imported around 600,000 cars over the last five years.

“This causes traffic congestion and makes it difficult to find space to park cars in big cities. It is sad to see that there were quarrels, including cases of murder over parking spots in Yangon and Mandalay. The government needs to avoid that kind of problem,” he said.
