NAY PYI TAW – Myanma Railways (MR) is planning to replace 200 old and outdated locomotives with new locomotives made by a local factory, according to an MR official.

At present, Myanmar has about 400 locomotives from England, Germany and South Korea. The replacement programme will begin when the factory’s construction is complete.

MR received a loan worth US$94 million from China for the construction of a locomotive factory inNay Pyi Taw and a train carriage factory in Myitnge. The factories are expected to complete by November 2016.

“We have about 400 locomotives, and over half of them are outdated. We ran tests on locomotive manufacturing at the Insein factory five years ago. MR will incur few expenses when the factory is complete,” said the official who asked not to be named.

The goal of the project is to produce new, highly effective locomotives and train carriages. Engineers from MR are being training in China. Six of seven new locomotives will be delivered to Myanmar from China on January 27. The rest will be produced in Myanmar with the help of Chinese engineers.

“We will produce the locomotives with foreign engineers until the project is finished in 2017. After that, we are aiming to produce locomotives by ourselves. We are planning to replace 20 locomotives annually in the future,” he said.

MR plans to buy the locomotives using state funds and overseas loans.
