QUAKE

PRIME MINISTER Prayut Chan-o-cha has sent a letter of condolences to his Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe following the two powerful earthquakes on the southern Japanese island of Kyushu. The quakes left at least 32 people dead and hundreds more injured.

General Prayut also offered to provide assistance to Japan. He expressed his sorrow on behalf of the Thai people towards the Japanese government and people over the disaster, according to Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesman Sek Wannamethee. “We hope that the situation will return to normal as soon as possible. The Thai government is ready to assist Japan,” his letter said.

There have been no reports of Thai nationals being injured or killed in the disaster, according to the Thai Embassy in Japan.

Thai Embassy Minister Bhakavat Tansakul and his team went to the quake-hit Kumamoto Prefecture to lend assistance to Thais living in the area. The team is working with the Thai |consulate-general in Osaka and Thai volunteers there, the Foreign Affairs Ministry said.

About 200 Thai nationals live in Kumamoto, which in the past few days suffered from two strong quakes. None of them have been reportedly dead or injured by the earthquakes, the ministry said.
