SINGAPOREAN Deputy Prime Minister and co-ordinating Minister for National Security Teo Chee Hean stressed the importance of the regional fight against terrorism in talks yesterday with Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha and other senior officials.
Prayut expressed support for efforts to combat terrorism, as well as interfaith dialogue, and moderate ways of thought. The Thai premier also noted that sustainable ways to deal with terrorism include eliminating poverty, plus social and resource inequality.
Prayut will visit Singapore on Friday for the Shangri-La Dialogue 15th Asia Security Summit, where he will give a keynote speech.
The Thai Information and Communication Technology Ministry and Singapore’s Communications and Information Ministry will also sign a memorandum of understanding today in Singapore.
The MoU will support cooperation on cyber security and try to prevent the online spread of extremist thought and ideologies that threaten mutual security.
Talks between Prayut and Teo also included the Thai political situation and education cooperation.
Prayut also expressed his gratitude for Singaporean Lee’s response to attend the next Leaders’ Retreat in Thailand.
Teo also met with Deputy PM and Defence Minister Prawit Wongsuwan and pledged full cooperation against terrorism and cyber crime, Defence Ministry spokesman Maj Gen Kongcheep Tantrawanit said.
Prawit said he was aware Singapore had set up a cyber centre to monitor such crimes, and Thailand was willing to cooperate more on information exchanges.
Teo has been on a working visit to Thailand from Sunday to today after being officially invited by the Thai Defence Ministry.
