The Constitution Drafting Commission (CDC) has still kept in tact capital punishment for party executives found guilty of selling positions in a new organic draft law, while considering adding the option of life imprisonment.
At the CDC’s meeting yesterday, the phrase,”… or life imprisonment” was subject for consideration to be added after the capital punishment, as shown to the Nation.
People have voiced concern that the death penalty is too severe for the violation of certain provisions stipulated in organic laws, especially for politicians who offer Cabinet seats for sale. The drafters have been asked to reconsider these clauses.
However, CDC sources told The Nation yesterday that the drafters had not yet backed down on the capital punishment law, despite complaints, though they are considering adding the option of life sentence.
One source pointed out that there are currently 13 laws that include the death penalty. These laws have been around for a long time, the source added, yet nobody had protested against them, so he questioned why politicians haved opposed its inclusion as an organic law.
