The Constitution Drafting Commission (CDC) will submit the draft bill on the National Human Rights Commission to the National Legislative Assembly for deliberation next Monday.
The NHRC would face the same “resetting” fate as the Election Commission, CDC chief Meechai Ruchupan said on Monday, referring to the provision in the draft EC bill requiring a complete replacement of the electoral agency’s membership prior to the next general election.
The bill is among 10 organic laws that need to be enacted following the promulgation of the new Constitution.
The NHRC has cried foul after learning about the reset addressed in the new draft bill.
Meechai said of the resetting of the EC that the decision would be beneficial to the country, reasoning that the EC’s structure would be changed, hence a resetting was the best way to accomplish this.
Chief Ombudsman General Viddhavat Rajatanun, meanwhile, said the Office of the Ombudsman was not worried about the resetting of the agency as its work requirements and qualifications were different from those of other independent agencies.
He said he had gone through the first draft of the Ombudsman bill and was satisfied with it.
