A “social contract” collating multi-party recommendations for national reconciliation is expected to be presented to Deputy Prime Minister Gen Prawit Wongsuwan next Monday.
Gen Chalermchai Sitthisart, the Army commander chairing a committee charged with formulating proposals to foster social harmony, said the panel would meet for the last time tomorrow (Thursday) and prepare a final report to be submitted to Prawit on Monday.
Chalermchai’s committee is the last of three military-appointed panels that have worked on the reconciliation scheme since February.
Major figures from all sides in the political conflict have participated in the talks, offering their views on how reconciliation might be achieved after more than a decade of deep division.
Chalermchai said his committee has considered their opinions, along with those of citizens across the country, in preparing the so-called social contract.
The next step remains unclear, however, with key players including politicians and political activists unwilling to endorse such a contract despite having cooperated in the process.
