The Chiang Mai Provincial Land Transport Office (LTO) plans to adopt a project called Taxi OK / Taxi VIP to find a solution for problems with taxis and songtaew.
The Chiang Mai Provincial LTO will cooperate with Nakorn Lanna Cooperative which has thousands of member songtaews and 350 taxis, and Nakorn Wiang Ping Cooperative who has 150 taxis.
The project, established by the Department of Land Transportation, is currently in the planning stage.
According to social media posts, Uber and Grab services are the preferred modes of public transportation but because the law doesn’t permit shared rides it remains illegal.
The project is expected to find a solution to Chiang Mai’s public transportation problems.
Chiang Mai Provincial LTO has emphasised that taxi drivers who do not use meters are acting illegally. The starting price for a taxi should be Bt40, with a further Bt6 per kilometre from the second to 10th kilometre. After that, each kilometre should cost an extra Bt10.
