A woman, 70, and her 25-year-old son escaped with minor injuries when their car plunged into a hole prepared for installing underground cables in Bangkok’s Thonburi district.

The accident happened at around 8.30pm on Thursday on Ratchada-Thaphra Road Soi 17 in Talad Plu subdistrict of Thonburi district.

Police from Talad Plu Station rushed to the scene and found a white Toyota Yaris had nosedived into a hole 4 metres wide, 50 metres long and 10 metres deep, which had been dug by the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration to move overhead power cables underground.

Officials rescued the driver Khemakorn Kongthanon, aged 70 years, and her son Warat, 25, from the car. Both suffered minor injuries.

Khemakorn said that she was driving from the Talad Plu market back to her home in the Tha Phra area on the left lane and saw no sign or lighting to indicate a construction was underway until her car plunged into the hole.

“Thanks to the seatbelts that we were wearing, otherwise my son and I could have been killed,” she said.

After the victims were rescued, a crane was brought in to extricate the car from the hole.

Officials have contacted the agency responsible for the construction to discuss compensation for damage to the victims.
