KBank records Bt22-bn profit in H1

Kasikornbank has announced net profit of Bt21.68 billion from the first half of 2018.

President Pipit Aneaknithi said net profit grew by Bt2.52 billion, 13.18 per cent, compared to the same period of 2017.

In terms of operating performance H1, KBank and its subsidiaries reported net profit of Bt21.68 billion, an increase of Bt2.52 billion or 13.18 per cent, mostly because KBank has set aside lower allowance for impairment loss on loans, he said.

However, operating profit before impairment loss on loans and debt securities and income tax expense was similar to the same period last year.

Net interest income increased by Bt1.63 billion or 3.51 per cent mainly due to interest income from repurchase agreement transactions and loans to customers. NIM stood at 3.4 per cent,

Meanwhile, non-interest income decreased by Bt134 million or 0.43 per cent due mostly to decrease in net premiums earned – net and fees waived for money transfers through digital channels – while revenue from money market and capital market products increased from sale of securities and foreign exchange transaction.

Moreover, other operating expenses increased by Bt1.59 billion or 5.11 per cent mainly due to employee and marketing expenses, resulting in a cost-to-income ratio of 41.13 per cent.

 VMG is the major shareholder in Titanium Compass which holds the right to manage media advertising along new rail routes in Malaysia for ten years. The company also holds the major stake in Meru Utama Sdn Bhd, which holds the right to manage advertising at Malaysian airports.

DKSH Expansion service provider posts rise in net profit

DKSH, an expansion services provider with a focus on Asia, increased net sales in the first half of 2018 by 7.4 per cent to 5.7 billion Swiss francs . EBIT of CHF 139.5 million was at last year’s level and profit after tax was 4.5 per cent ahead of the prior year.

Business Unit Consumer Goods returned to sales growth in the first half of 2018. This required targeted investments and initiatives that impacted profits. DKSH substantially upgraded key account management, expanded the route-to-market and invested in its businesses in Indonesia and e-commerce. DKSH also recently announced an agreement to sell its healthcare business in China to Warburg Pincus, emphasizing the increased strategic focus of the Group.

CEO Stefan Butz, said the three business units – Healthcare, Performance Materials and Technology reported good results and increased profitability.

In Business Unit/ Consumer Goods, it managed to increase net sales for the first time in several years, though the targeted  initiatives and investments in this business resulted in higher costs.

Group operating profit was at last year’s level. DKSH, on a Group level, developed its acquisition pipeline and strengthened its presence in New Zealand with the purchase of Davies Foods. We also further increased our strategic focus with the transaction in China.

Huawei aims to lead Thai phone sales in 2020

HUAWEI expects to clinch the lead in the country’s market for smartphones and other mobile phones in 2020.

The China-based technology giant is also releasing a new mid-range smartphone in Thailand to boost its revenue growth.

Tossaporn Nisthanon, deputy country director at Huawei Consumer Business Group (Thailand), said that meeting its ambition for the top spot in 2020 would give the company a market share of more than 20 per cent.

The market for smartphones and other mobile phones has reached sales of around 1.2 million units a month. The firm has gained a market share of 14.7 per cent, putting it in second place in the segment, Tossaporn said.

The new mid-range smartphone series, comprising the Huawei nova 3 and nova 3I, uses high-end technology such as artificial intelligence.

Huawei said the nova 3 and nova 3i have been “designed to redefine the selfie”, with four cameras and AI technology on Huawei’s new NPU chipsets. The nova 3 sells for Bt16,990 and the nova 3I, Bt9,990. Pre-orders for the nova 3 series are being taken from today until July 31 and customers can get hold of the phones in early August.

Tossaporn said that in the future the firm will release a new tablet, a new product category, and other gadgets to support its market goals.

It will also distribute its products and gadgets via omnichannel pathways.

Tossaporn said that the smartphone market had declined in the first haft of this year, under pressure from low-end models priced at less than Bt5,000.

However, he said the market would pick up in the in the second half of this year, thanks to the release of new models backed by promotional campaigns. He sees the mid-range smartphone market – with models priced from Bt5,000 to Bt15,000 – increasing as users upgrade from the low end of the market.

STATE-OWNED airports were quieter than expected in the quarter to June, with a decline in the growth of passenger numbers from the corresponding period last year, prompting speculation that the World Cup may have been a factor.

 For April to June – the third quarter of the fiscal year – the growth in passenger numbers at airports run by Airports of Thailand (AOT) was just 4.5 per cent, the state agency said, adding that AOT airports have been asked to report on what may have caused the slump in growth.

The AOT, while releasing the June quarter passenger figures, also said it was planning more cargo services next year. In a related development, Team Consulting Engineering and Management Plc said it will focus on consulting services in Asean after the region’s gross domestic product (GDP) is likely to see expansion in the range of 5-9 per cent, fuelling expectations for a 3 per cent rise in the company’s income.

Nitinai Sirismatthakarn, president of the AOT, said that following the year-on-year drop in growth for passenger numbers for the fiscal third quarter, the agency has asked that all airports under its control look into reasons for the easing off in growth. Managers of the airports will report to the AOT board on their findings.

Nitinai said much of the decline for the quarter is expected to have come from Suvarnabhumi International Airport, with fewer flights in the quarter and the effect of the month-long football World Cup in Russia.

In regard to the recent tourist boat disaster off Phuket, he said that any impact would not be felt across the broader tourism sector as the accident – with the deaths of dozens of mostly Chinese visitors – had occurred outside the high season.

Some flights from China have been cancelled but other opportunities would present with bookings for flights on large aircraft from other countries including Russia and India, he said.

In the first two quarters of this fiscal year, starting from October 2017 to March 2018, AOT’s income climbed 17-18 per cent and the growth figure is similar for the third quarter, Nitinai said.

The AOT’s income is expected to grow 9-10 per cent for the whole of this fiscal year, as targeted, he said.

For the next fiscal year, starting from October, the company will focus more on cargo services for agricultural products, with the aim of making the country an air transport hub for the CLMV countries of Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam, he said.

The number of passengers using services at AOT airports is forecast to double from 45 million now to about 90 million in the next three years and the company will have to rush to construct two more airports in Lamphun and Phuket provinces, Nitinai said.

The AOT will also hold an auction for its duty-free concession, with the winner to be determined by the end of this year, before the current concession expires in September 2020, he said.

Chawalit Chantararat, president of Team Consulting Engineering and Management, said that due to growth in its integrated consulting services and a 5 per cent annual expansion in Thailand’s consulting service business, the company is targeting income growth of 3 per cent per year.

The government, under its development policies, is set to hire a consulting firm for an amount of Bt2 million and for projects such as those related to the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) as well as the expansion of five border areas, which have been developed as special economic development zones, he said.

The company also has planned to expand into three more countries – Indonesia, Singapore and Brunei, in the Asean Economic Community (AEC), he said. Currently, it operates businesses in six other AEC countries aside from Thailand: Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar, Vietnam, the Philippines and East Timor.

SIAM Commercial Bank Plc (SCB), Bank of Ayudhya Plc (Krungsri) and CIMB Thai Bank Plc have enjoyed healthy revenue growth in the first half of this year, thanks to the country’s improving economy.

SCB and its subsidiaries announced total operating income of Bt34.3 billion in the second quarter of 2018, a 1.1 per cent year-on-year increase on the back of net interest income growth of 4.7 per cent year on year, despite pressure from lower non-interest income. However, investments in new technology platforms as part of the group’s Transformation Programme and digital acquisition activities led to a rise in operating expenses and a decline in net profit to Bt11.1 billion – down 6.7 per cent year on year for the quarter. The figures are based on the company’s unaudited consolidated financial statements.

For the first half, SCB’s total revenue was Bt69.72 billion, up 3.8 per cent from the same period of last year. Net profit stood at Bt 22.5 billion, dropping 5.7 per cent from the same period of last year, the bank’s president and CEO Arthid Nanthawithaya said yesterday.

SCB’s smaller rival Krungsri announced it booked interest revenue of Bt36.51 billion for the six months, up 9.24 per cent from the same period of last year. Income from fees and services came to Bt10.5 billion, up 12.9 per cent. Those figures helped the bank to record net profit of Bt12.5 billion, a rise of 8.4 per cent from the same period of last year

Krungsri president and chief executive officer Noriaki Goto described the bank’s overall financial results for the half year as quite satisfactory. He noted the strong performance, particularly in loans, net interest income, non-interest income and coverage ratio. The bank posted 5.9 per cent loan growth in the first half, reflecting improved economic conditions.

“The bank’s coverage ratio improved to 161.7 per cent, while our asset quality remains strong with a non-performing loans (NPL) ratio of 2.02 per cent,” Goto said. “The solid performance reflects our competitive strength and prudent business execution capacities.

“As for the outlook for the remainder of the year, we expect the Thai economy to continue expanding and achieve a higher growth than the earlier forecast, with GDP growth forecast for 2018 at 4.7 per cent, up from 4 per cent. Barring further escalation in US-China trade disputes, the revision was on account of merchandise exports and tourism, which continue to improve in line with the global economic expansion, and increased domestic demand momentum.

“This contributed to a more favourable operating environment. Krungsri expects the full-year loan growth performance to outpace our prior guidance and to be in the range of 8-10 per cent.”

As of 30 June, Krungsri – Thailand’s fifth-largest bank in terms of assets, loans and deposits, and one of the five domestic systemically important banks (D-SIBs) – reported Bt1.64 trillion in loans, Bt1.37 trillion in deposits, and Bt2.1 trillion in total assets. The bank’s capital was strong at Bt223.2 billion, equivalent to 14.95 per cent of risk-weighted assets, with 11.28 per cent in common equity tier-1 capital.

Meanwhile, CIMB Thai Bank Plc reported consolidated unaudited financial results for the first half of this year.

Its consolidated operating income rose by Bt412.2 million, up 6.5 per cent year on year, to Bt6.79 billion from the first half of last year. The main contributors were a 5.2 per cent growth in net interest income, a 10 per cent growth in net fee and service income and 12.6 per cent growth in other income.

However, the bank’s pre-provision operating profit decreased 1.4 per cent year on year to Bt2.92 billion, attributed to a 13.3 per cent year on year increase in operating expenses. Net profit fell by Bt117.7 million, or 24.6 per cent year on year to Bt360.1 million, due to higher operating expenses coupled with a 1 per cent increase in provisions, said CIMB Thai Bank Plc president and chief executive officer Kittiphun Anutarasoti.

SAWASDEESHOP has released the DeeMoney mobile application for inbound and outbound international money remittances and e-payment services.

The firm said that by the end of this year it expects to provide 100,000 transaction a month. It also expects to create an e-transaction value of around US$5 billion in the next five years.

Aswin Phlaphongphanich, chief executive of SawasdeeShop, said the DeeMoney application has been designed for Android smartphones. With the application, users can access international digital money transfer services to cover 180 countries.

Users who want to access these services must register at branches and show their ID cards or passports. The application will support the iOS system from next month.

“We provide one-stop services for international money transfers and currency exchanges at 21 outlets and four branches in Bangkok,” said Aswin.

“We have created a strategic partnership with SuperRich International Exchange (1965) to offer exchange services in 34 currencies at its outlets. We are providing services with secure, affordable fees for customers’ satisfaction. They can have confidence in accessing our services.”

It also has created a promotion campaign to run until December 31, enabling customers to make international transfers from Bt1,000 to Bt800,000. They will pay a flat service charge fee of Bt150 per transaction.

He said that the value of money transfers of inbound remittances to Thailand is US$6.7 billion. Outbound remittances are valued at US$4.1 billion, with a money exchange volume of US$36.7 billion.

“We are a non-bank international money transfer license operator in Thailand, with the licence issued by the Bank of Thailand (BoT),” said Aswin.

“DeeMoney is positioned to provide secure and affordable international money remittance and payment solutions to the unbanked population of 5 million foreign workers from Laos, Cambodia and Myanmar working in Thailand, as well as the 300,000 expatriates, 30 million tourists and domestic Thais nationwide.”

The firm in the third quarter of this year will allow customers to transfer money via QR code. It will also provide an e-KYC (know your customer), e-wallet, blockchain-based services, digital assets and cryptocurrencies, digital money exchange and business money transfers to support its customers in the future.

NPPG (Thailand) Plc has formed a joint venture firm with Kinghill Overseas Holdings Ltd, a subsidiary of Charoen Pokpand Group, for a restaurant in China in the last quarter of this year, the company’s chief executive officer Supajak Triratnopas said yesterday.

He added that the company will hold a 49 per cent stake in the joint venture firm, Kinghill Food Co Ltd, with 51 per cent held by Kinghill Overseas Holdings Ltd.

Following the business expansion in China, the company expects its total revenue will increase by up to four-fold from its estimated revenue of Bt600 million this year, he said.
