Starbucks chief Schultz retiring, may run for president

Washington

Howard Schultz, who built a small Seattle coffee chain into the global powerhouse Starbucks, announced Monday he was retiring from the company, fueling speculation he may seek the Democratic presidential nomination in 2020.

Schultz, 64, has been serving as executive chairman of Starbucks since stepping down as chief executive in April of last year and handing over to Kevin Johnson.

Schultz will leave the company at the end of the month and take on the honorary title of chairman emeritus, Starbucks said in a statement.

Schultz’s announcement triggered immediate speculation that he may consider entering politics as a Democrat and run for the White House two years from now.

Schultz told The New York Times he hadn’t decided on his next move yet, but “for some time now, I have been deeply concerned about our country – the growing division at home and our standing in the world.”

Schultz, who has been openly critical of President Donald Trump, said “one of the things I want to do in my next chapter is to figure out if there is a role I can play in giving back.

“I intend to think about a range of options, and that could include public service,” he said, when asked if he was weighing a presidential run.

“But I’m a long way from making any decisions about the future.

“I want to be of service to our country, but that doesn’t mean I need to run for public office to accomplish that,” Schultz told the Times.

Schultz joined Starbucks in 1982 as director of operations and marketing and helped transform the Seattle-based company into a global behemoth with more than 28,000 outlets in 77 countries.

“I set out to build a company that my father, a blue-collar worker and World War II veteran, never had a chance to work for,” Schultz said in an open letter to past and present Starbucks employees.

“Together we’ve done that, and so much more, by balancing profitability and social conscience, compassion and rigor, and love and responsibility.”

Racial bias awareness training

In its statement, Starbucks did not mention any political ambitions for the departing executive but said Schultz was “looking forward to spending more time with his family this summer.”

“He is also writing a book about Starbucks social impact work and the efforts to redefine the role and responsibility of a public company in an ever-changing society,” it said.

Schultz’s departure comes a week after the company closed more than 8,000 US stores to provide racial bias awareness training to around 175,000 employees.

The move followed the April 12 arrest of two black men in a Philadelphia Starbucks, which sparked outrage, protests and soul-searching about racial tensions that have been exacerbated under President Trump.

Speaking to CNN about the closure, Schultz said “we realize that four hours of training is not going to solve racial inequity in America or anyone coming into our stores who may have a problem.

“But we have to start the conversation.”

Starbucks shares were down 1.31 percent to $56.32 in after-hours trading on Wall Street.

Banks freed up for insurance push

Corporate June 05, 2018 01:00

By THE NATION

COMMERCIAL banks will soon be able to offer insurance policies to prospective customers over the phone and through the post, broadening their sales channels and putting them in more direct competition with brokers and agents.

Suthiphon Thaveechaiyagarn, secretary-general of the Office of Insurance Commission (OIC), said the regulator had agreed on an amendment of a draft OIC notification that liberalises the sales regime for insurance.

Currently, banks are allowed to sell insurance policies only at their branches and online. The reform unshackles the banks in their marketing of insurance. Insurance brokers and agents had been among those opposed to any changes in the sales regime. However, the OIC is yet to decide on whether to allow banks to set up mareketing booths for the sale of insurance to passers-by in public areas.

“The approval of this draft notification is aimed at upgrading the supervision of market behaviour involved in the offering of insurance policies in a way that will increase people’s confidence and trust and results in the fairer treatment of insurance policy-holders,” Suthiphon said.

After the OIC approval is given, the draft notification will be forwarded to the OIC chairman for an official signature that will enable the reform’s enforcement.

A source said that once the OIC’s approval is in hand, the banks can make the most of the increased channels to generate more insurance-based income, while consumers will reap the gains of the greater competition in the insurance market.

Currently, only agents and brokers can sell insurance policies over the phone. They had voiced their opposition to a change in the rules, citing concerns over how they would compete with the banks with their broad customer base gained through their deposit and lending activities.

Against this backdrop, the OIC had delayed making a decision on the regulatory change in order to reduce the impact on the brokers and agents.

Chuchatr Pramoolpol, OIC deputy secretary-general, said the agency forecasts that the value of insurance premiums will rise by 6.4-7.4 per cent to Bt871.04 billion for this year. Within this market, the value of premiums for life insurance is projected to increase 6.6-7.6 per cent to Bt640.08 billion and non-life insurance premiums are tipped to grow 5.7-6.7 per cent to Bt230.96 billion, he said.

Over the next one to two years, the value of total insurance premiums are forecast to rise to Bt1 trillion, on expectations of a sustained global economic recovery, rising exports, expanded manufacturing, and a recovery in private investment. Fairer income distribution across the country and the OIC’s market development measures would also play a role, Chuchatr said.

“There are bright prospects ahead for life insurance business, particularly through the growth in bancassurance,” Chuchatr said.

For the first quarter of this year, total direct premiums climbed 5.9 per cent year on year to Bt216.05 billion and accounted for 5.32 per cent of the nation’s gross domestic product.

Of the total, direct premiums from life insurance business advanced 6.79 per cent to Bt159.02 billion and direct premiums from non-life insurance edged up 3.5 per cent year on year to Bt57.03 billion. Some 51.6 per cent of life insurance was offered through bancassurance, while 42.3 per cent was made through insurance agents for the first three months of this year.

In 2017, about 49.7 per cent of life insurance was offered through insurance agents and 44.1 per cent through bancassurance.

B Grimm Power Plc (BGRIM) last week started commercial operation of its latest power plant in Rayong, raising the company’s combined generating portfolio to date to 1,912 megawatts.

The 133-MW combined cycle power plant, operated by subsidiary Amata B. Grimm Power (Rayong) 4 Ltd, known as ABPR 4, came on line on June 1, 2018 as stipulated under the 25-year power sale contract with the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (Egat).

“The coming on-stream of ABPR4 underscores our continued commitment to add new capacities to meet Thailand’s growing energy need,” said BGRIM President Preeyanart Soontornwata.

ABPR4 is the second of three combined cycle power houses BGRIM has been building at the Amata City Industrial Estate in Rayong, developed under the government’s Small Power Producer (SPP) scheme, with a combined capacity of 399 MW.

These Rayong facilities will specifically ensure availability of efficient and reliable electricity supplies to the thriving industrial park.

BGRIM will later this year systematically put a series of power generation projects on stream to consolidate its overall portfolio to more than 2,000 MW.

Airline profits down but confirm long-term good health

Corporate June 04, 2018 10:35

By The Nation

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) is forecasting that airlines will achieve collective net profits of $33.8 billion (4.1 per cent net margin) in 2018.

It would represent a solid performance despite rising costs, primarily in fuel and labour, as well as an upturn in the interest rate cycle. These rising costs are the main drivers for the downward revision from the previous forecast of $38.4 billion in December 2017.

In 2017 airlines earned a record $38.0 billion but that high figure was severely distorted by special accounting items, such as one-off tax credits, which boosted 2017 profits.

Operating profits, while still high by past standards, have been trending slowly down since early 2016, as a result of accelerating costs.

“Solid profitability is holding up in 2018, despite rising costs,” said Alexandre de Juniac, IATA’s Director General and CEO.

“The industry’s financial foundations are strong with a nine-year run in the black that began in 2010 and the return on invested capital will exceed the cost of capital for a fourth consecutive year.

“At long last, profits are becoming normal for airlines. This enables them to fund growth, expand employment, strengthen balance sheets and reward our investors.”

In 2018, the return on invested capital is expected to be 8.5 per cent, down from 9 per cent in 2017.

This still exceeds the average cost of capital, which has risen to 7.7 per cent on higher bond yields (7.1 per cent in 2017).

This is critical for attracting the substantial capital needed by the industry to expand its fleet and services.
