Take a photograph of a Pink Lady apple or other food and your shutterbug skills could land you a trip to London.

The “PinkLadyClicksTH” food photography and videography contest on the theme “Always Wow” was launched recently by the Pink Lady brand at the GlowFish office, Sathorn Thani Building.

“Not only do we offer the best apples to consumers, but we also strive to be different. We want to be inspired by consumers and become a part of their lifestyle,” said regional brand manager Ryan Au.

The event has been a hit among photographers all over the world, gathering more than 50,000 image submissions from 60 countries. The concept behind #PinkLadyClicksTH reflects the lifestyle of the new generation who like to share the stories of their daily life through social media. Pink Lady encourages everyone to take and share his or her lifestyle food photography and videography. The photographs can be of anything that relates to food and represent inspiring stories such as a culinary trip, a favourite menu, or a skilful chef—something that gives that “Always Wow” feeling.

At the launch, photographs from the Pink Lady Food Photographer of the Year 2018 awards were on exhibit for the first time in Thailand. Special guest Chayanee Chomsaengchun, professional photographer, influencer, and graphic designer joined the campaign as a judge and to share her photography tips with contestants.

“There is no precise technique to capturing a good photograph, the key is to appreciate the story you want to tell. Try searching for your own style, then practice and explore from there. For this campaign, I would like to encourage everyone to participate in the contest, as you will have an opportunity to travel to London and attend the prestigious 2019 Pink Lady Photographer of Year Award Night. The final decision won’t be just up to me, but also by public vote, so keep it fun and be yourself.” Chayanee added.

Also in attendance was Chudaree “Tam” Debhakam, celebrity chef, who presented her special dish that uses Pink Lady apples.

“I value fresh ingredients. Today a lot of people tend to use fresh seasonal ingredients more since they make the dishes taste significantly better. As a chef, posting food photos on social media is fun. It has challenged me to create a unique and fascinating savoury dish with the Pink Lady apple. The apple’s pure taste pairs well with meat and will also make the dish more refreshing.” said Chef Tam.

For those interested in the contest, post a lifestyle food photo or video on your social media accounts with the hashtag #PinkLadyClicksTH. The contest is open through February 28.

Young Fai-Fah members make a difference

TMB recently hosted the “Fai-Fah Art Fest 2018: the Beauty of Ordinary Kids” at its headquarters on Phahonyothin Road to showcase the talents of young members of Fai-Fah Youth Centres, a CSR project run by the TMB Foundation, which engages them in creative activities in art, music, sports, language and cooking to make a difference to their lives and bring sustainable changes to their communities.

The fest showcased artworks, products, and performances by young Fai-Fah members aged between 12 and 17 from the four Fai-Fah centres in the Pradipat, Pracha Uthit, Chan, and Bangkok Noi areas.

“This year’s theme is to give regular young people an opportunity to demonstrate their talents and to show their development empowered by the centres. This activity also encourages young people to make a difference, in line with TMB’s philosophy of ‘Make The Difference’,” said Piti Tantakasem, chief executive officer of TMB.

The fest was divided into four main zones. The Art Showcase featured paintings and scarves painted with patterns that captured the essence of communities in Sathorn by young Fai-Fah members. The Shopping Zone had canvas tote bags in different sizes, water bottles, scarves, snacks, and baked goods. The CSR Activities Zone offered two creative workshops “Story Stones” and “Life-changing Rubber Bands.” The last zone was the Talent Showcase, where young people showed off their extraordinary singing, dancing, musical, and martial art skills.

Thanyakan “Prozza” Wanitchatchawankul, a first-generation Fai-Fah member from Pracha Uthit and the artist who made the magic marker sketch said, “The beauty of ordinary kids is in their true selves. After I discovered Fai-Fah, my way of thinking started to change. I’ve learned how to share. I always set aside some free time to volunteer as a teacher assistant in art classes at the centres and art schools near my home.”

Another member Kittiphat “X” Mookphila, revealed, “My passion for dancing brought me to the Fai-Fah centre, and it turned me from a troublemaker to a confident person who knows how to be a good leader, a good follower, and a team player. My dance crew has participated in various contests and even made it to the final five.”

Thaiphat “Nud” Wanna, a member from the fifth class at Fai-Fah Pradipat and creator of a delicious lasagna with tom yum sauce, said, “I didn’t know how to cook at first, but I enjoy eating and wanted to learn how. I discovered my passion for cooking and decided to study hotel management. In the future, I would like to become a successful chef and own a restaurant.”

Patcharanita “Fah” Wongkham, a member from the second class at Fai-FahPradipat who made orange buns, stated: “The bakery class I took at Fai-Fah taught me how to talk to others and make new friends. I also learned how to make European and Asian pastries as well as techniques for mixing dough, selecting ingredients, setting the table, and serving the food. I’m going to start making baked goods for sale at a market near my home. In the future, it is my dream to own a bakery.”

Pannawan “Plai” Yommana, a member from the second class at Fai-Fah Chan who painted scarves with patterns embodying the identity of Sathorn communities, said: “I learned how to paint scarves in my clothing design class. I was taught to make designs by painting. For these scarves, I’ve chosen designs that capture the distinctive features of communities in Sathorn and Thainess. In the future, I’d like to become a designer.”

Bangkok children ought to spend some of their school holiday at the balloon-intensive “Kids Carnival: Little Nemo in Slumberland” at Siam Paragon’s Parc Siam from October 17-21.

It’s a French touring carnival with two dozen inflated characters and is making its first appearance in Southeast Asia right here.

“The balloon show is the work of world-renowned French street-theatre troupe Plasticiens Volants and will feature spectacular giant inflated puppets flying over Parc Paragon, combined with stunning lighting and music,” says senior executive vice president Mayuree Chaipromprasith.

Little Nemo is the cartoon character that Winsor McKay first drew for the New York Herald Tribune in 1905, which went on to book and film adaptations and even an opera.

In “Slumberland”, he has a fantastic dream, which is recounted with 20 colourful floating inflatables, including a magical flying bed whose legs grow to nine metres, a floating castle and vast raspberry fields.

The quality of sacrifice

event October 19, 2018 13:00

The loyalty, selfless sacrifices and the kindness of volunteers during the months following the passing of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej are portrayed in the exhibition “Life’s Worth” showing in front of Leica Gallery Bangkok at Gaysorn Village until October 29.

The images were captured by three Leica Thailand ambassadors – Tul Hirunyalawan, Peerapat Wimolrungkarat and Chutchawarn Janthachotibutr – in a tribute to the late monarch on the second anniversary of his death..

“We wanted to do something that reflected how King Bhumibol worked tirelessly for his people and one of the best ways of doing this was to capture the volunteers helping out others without expecting anything in return. This to me was beautiful and unconditional and perfectly reflected what the late Monarch had always demonstrated,” said Tul.

“I had to leave the country for quite a long time and would only be back after the cremation, so I went to pay my respects one last time before I left. At the venue, I experienced the overwhelming kindness of the volunteers. I was responsible for photographing the volunteers in the kitchen, who provided the food to keep mourners going. I spoke to many of those manning the food booths and discovered that a lot of them had been cooking for the people from the very first day. All of them said it was a tiny gesture compared to what the late King had done for the people of Thailand throughout his life,” added Chutchawarn..

Volunteers Somyod Pornchairattanachot, Watcharee Chaowana and Saroj Dulyakong spoke of their experiences during the historical occasion. Somyod, owner of KhaosanAirport Van Rental, stated: “I was inspired to become a volunteer because I grew up in Phan Fah district and had the opportunity to regularly witness His Majesty coming and going. I wanted to do good things for our father, so I volunteered to show people the way and make their visits more convenient.”

Saroj, a sound engineer, said he started volunteering almost immediately following the announcement of the Monarch’s death. “I thought of how His Majesty had always worked hard for the people of Thailand without any complaint and I wanted to do something good for others. I decided to buy several appliances along with instant coffee, chocolate drinks and noodles to give out as well as offering transportation funded by myself and friends on Facebook. Those who could not be there with us, sent money and supplies. We did this because Thailand is our home.”

Seacon Bangkae admits it’s haunted – for Halloween

event October 16, 2018 09:05

Bangkok shopping mall Seacon Bangkae is getting in a Halloween mood from October 19 to 28, setting up a “Ghost Party on Death Island” in its Main Atrium.

The mall on Phetchkasem Road, with sponsorship from Thai Life Insurance, is building a deserted island in the middle of the sea, which will have more than 30 ghosts haunting shoppers.

It will be full of scary derelict schools, hospitals and other buildings – and feature a parade of spooky ghosts.

Rossaporn Khiewwan, assistant manager of marketing, says there’ll be doctor and nurse ghosts, a student ghost, a joker ghost, a nun ghost, a ghost in pyjamas and, why not, a zombie, so cameras should be at the ready at all times.

The not-quite dead will be leading bemused guests into a “haunted building” with more fights hiding in every corner. It’s free to experience three times a day – at 11.30am and 2.30 and 5.30pm.

Elsewhere, spirits straight from the crypt will be selling souvenirs, food and other products at more than 50 shops – though getting them might be a challenge for the nerves.

Almond milk promoted as vegetarian fest gets underway

Blue Diamond Growers, a US-based almond-growing agricultural cooperative based in Sacramento, California, recently promoted the natural goodness of its Almond Breeze range with an interactive “Fun Art Day Workshop” for the media at Paintbar on the 6th floor of Piman 49 complex.

The workshop explored the origins of almonds by inviting guests to paint almond trees on their easels.
Since there are different varietals, the time frame of when blooms occur can vary. Climate variation is considered one of the most critical phases in growing almond trees since it can profoundly impact the harvest size. Between late February and early March, almond tree buds burst into bloom in preparation for pollination and it was this that inspired the fun art day workshop, organisers said.
“Leading a healthy lifestyle is an expression of who you are more and more people are embracing a creative and positive attitude to life and want to add wonderful natural ingredients such as California almonds which go into creating Almond Breeze into their daily diets,” said Nitin Batra, international business development manager for Blue Diamond.
Brand Ambassador for Blue Diamond Almond Breeze, actress and model Matcha Mosimann also joined the afternoon event, talking about n how she keeps fit and stays healthy and encouraging others to do the same, especially during the Vegetarian Festival, which runs from today until October 17.
Renowned Thai Health and fitness blogger, Jessica Cuny shared her secret Almond Breeze drink recipes – a Latte smoothie and a Super berries smoothie.
Almond Breeze is available in six flavours; Original, Unsweetened, Vanilla, Chocolate and Latte, which are vegetarian as well as Matcha flavour. All varieties are available at convenience stores and supermarkets throughout Thailand in 180 ml and 946 ml cartons.
