China vows omicron wont derail Beijing Winter Olympics

#SootinClaimon.Com : ขอบคุณแหล่งข้อมูล : หนังสือพิมพ์ The Nation.

https://www.nationthailand.com/life/40009455

China says its determined to hold a successful Winter Olympics in roughly 65 days even after the World Health Organization warned Covid cases may surge due to “severe consequences” fueled by omicron.

The new variant “will definitely bring some challenges to prevention and control,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said Tuesday at a regular press briefing in Beijing.

“However with China’s experience in dealing with Covid-19, I completely believe that the Winter Olympics will be held smoothly and on schedule,” he said.

China has often touted its success fighting the pandemic while criticizing nations including the U.S. for their fatalities. It has stuck to its zero-tolerance approach to handling Covid as other countries started opening — at least before omicron arrived. China has deployed some of the toughest methods in the world to contain its spread since the earliest days of the pandemic last year, including long quarantines and severe lockdowns on flareups.

The Global Times, a newspaper backed by the ruling Communist Party, said in an editorial Monday that China is in the best position in the world to stop any new outbreak due to omicron, describing the nation as a “true impregnable fortress” against the spread of coronavirus.

In April, Chinese leader Xi Jinping promised his nation would hold “a simple, safe and splendid Olympics,” which are set for Feb. 4-20 in Beijing. Still, China has faced headwinds, most notably from the U.S. Earlier this month, President Joe Biden said he’s weighing a diplomatic boycott of the spectacle, meaning the U.S. would decline to send a delegation of government officials.

The White House later said Washington has “serious concerns about the human rights abuses we’ve seen in Xinjiang,” where a United Nations assessment says an estimated 1 million members of ethnic minorities, including Muslim Uyghurs, have been detained.

Beijing denies the allegations, saying it is providing education to children and job training to adults to permanently raise living standards in the impoverished region.

Messi wins record seventh Ballon dOr as Putellas claims womens award

Lionel Messi has extended his own record by winning the most prestigious individual prize in football, the Ballon dOr, for a seventh time.

Argentina’s Lionel Messi has crowned the Ballon d’Or award for a record-extending seventh time on Monday, as his former club Barcelona’s Alexia Putellas clinched the women’s award after a stellar season with the Catalan club.

Messi, 34, beat another favorite Robert Lewandowski of Poland to receive the trophy from his friend Luis Suarez.

Now the Paris Saint-Germain striker is two triumphs clear of arch-rival Cristiano Ronaldo as the five-time winner finished sixth this year, the first time that he was voted out of the top three since 2010.

The Paris Saint-Germain dominated the award from 2009 to 2012 and won another two in 2015 and 2019.

“It’s incredible to be here again,” Messi said at the ceremony, which was held at Theatre du Chatelet in Paris.

“Two years ago I thought it was the last time. People were starting to ask me when I was going to retire but now I’m here in Paris and very happy,” he added.

Messi helped his country win the Copa America this summer which ended his long-waiting title-drought with the senior national team. He was also named the best player of the tournament and claimed the Golden Boot.

Despite the shocking exit from Barcelona in August, he has ended the last season with the La Liga giants in style, scoring 38 goals in 48 games and winning the Copa del Rey.

“It’s a special year for me with this Copa America title. It meant a lot to win at the Maracana stadium and I was so happy to celebrate with the people from Argentina,” Messi said. “I don’t know if it’s the best year of my life – I’ve had a long career – but it was a special one with the title with Argentina after the tough times and the criticism.”

Bayern Munich forward Lewandowski came second with only 38 points behind Messi (613 vs 580), which proved that the 170 juries from all over the world also highly recognized the prolific striker’s performance.

Lewandowski has been the favorite to claim the award in 2020, but the organizers finally canceled the vote due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Even Messi admitted that his biggest contender “deserved to win it last year”.

The captain of Poland scored 53 goals in all competitions in 2021 for Bayern and was awarded the Striker of The Year prize, a new award that was only announced hours before the ceremony began.

Chelsea midfielder Jorginho, having won the Champions League with his club and Euro 2020 with Italy, ranked third in the vote as Karim Benzema of Real Madrid, who is enjoying an impressive run this season, was in the fourth place.

Putellas, captaining Barcelona to a treble-winning season, won the third edition of the women’s Ballon d’Or. Her Barcelona and Spain teammate Jennifer Hermoso was second, with Sam Kerr of Chelsea coming in third.

The 27-year-old Putellas was not the only Barcelona player to take a prize the night as the 19-year-old Pedri won the Kopa Trophy for the best player aged under 21.

Paris Saint-Germain’s Gianluigi Donnarumma, who helped Italy win Euro 2020 in which he was named the best player, won the Yashin Trophy for the best goalkeeper.

Tiger Woods admits his days as a full-time pro golfer are over after car crash

#SootinClaimon.Com : ขอบคุณแหล่งข้อมูล : หนังสือพิมพ์ The Nation.

https://www.nationthailand.com/life/40009422

In an interview with Golf Digest that was released Monday, Tiger Woods said that while he could see himself playing in occasional PGA Tour events, his career as a full-time PGA Tour golfer is over after the severe leg injuries he suffered in a high-speed car crash last February.

“Ithink something that is realistic is playing the Tour one day – never full time, ever again – but pick and choose, just like Mr. [Ben] Hogan did. Pick and choose a few events a year and you play around that,” Woods said, citing the golf legend who recovered from serious injuries suffered in a 1949 car crash to win six more majors while playing a limited schedule. “You practice around that, and you gear yourself up for that. I think that’s how I’m going to have to play it from now on. It’s an unfortunate reality, but it’s my reality. And I understand it, and I accept it.”

The interview was released eight days after Woods tweeted a video of himself taking practice swings on the range, accompanied with a message that read “Making progress.” The video fueled speculation that the 15-time major winner would be returning to the tour soon, but Woods told Golf Digest that he has “so far to go. . . . I’m not even at the halfway point.”

“I have so much more muscle development and nerve development that I have to do in my leg,” he said. “At the same time, as you know, I’ve had five back operations. So I’m having to deal with that. So as the leg gets stronger, sometimes the back may act up. . . . It’s a tough road.”

Woods said he has lengthened his putter so he would have to bend over less while on the greens and only recently has returned to full-swing practice, and only on a limited basis.

Woods suffered comminuted open fractures to the tibia and fibula in his right leg during the car crash in Southern California, which means both bones broke into at least three pieces and broke through the skin. He also suffered foot and ankle injuries. At one point, he told Golf Digest, there was concern about whether he would have to have his leg amputated.

“There was a point in time when, I wouldn’t say it was 50/50, but it was damn near there if I was going to walk out of that hospital with one leg,” he said.

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department officials said in April that Woods crashed because of excessive speed, though they ruled out impaired driving and declined to charge him with an infraction. Woods was driving between 84 and 87 mph in a 45-mph zone when his Genesis SUV smashed into and hopped over a median, according to investigators who cited evidence recovered from a data recorder. Woods’s car was traveling 75 mph when it hit a tree, pirouetted and rolled into a ditch in Rolling Hills Estates, a neighborhood in the posh suburb of Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.

Woods previously had bounced back from five back surgeries, including spinal-fusion surgery in 2017, and five procedures on his left leg. His last appearance at a pro golf event was his tie for 38th at the Masters in November 2020.

“I don’t have to compete and play against the best players in the world to have a great life,” he said. “After my back fusion, I had to climb Mount Everest one more time. I had to do it, and I did. This time around, I don’t think I’ll have the body to climb Mount Everest and that’s OK. I can still participate in the game of golf. I can still, if my leg gets OK, I can still click off a tournament here or there. But as far as climbing the mountain again and getting all the way to the top, I don’t think that’s a realistic expectation of me.”

German coach Ralf Rangnick named Manchester Uniteds interim manager #SootinClaimon.Com

England’s Manchester United has reached an agreement with 63-year-old German coach Ralf Ragnick to become an interim manager for six months until the end of May. Once the six months are up, he will become the club’s consultant for two years.

The club is negotiating Rangnick’s compensation with his current club Lokomotiv Moscow, though no problems are expected.

Rangnick, however, will not be helping out in the Man U-Chelsea face-off on Sunday because he still does not have a work permit.

Who is Ralf Rangnick?

Rangnick was referred to as “The Professor” when he managed German teams Stuttgart, Schalke 04, Hoffenheim and RB Leipzig.

Though he hasn’t won too many major trophies, he did invent the “gegenpressing” style, which means a team must regain possession of the ball immediately.

He has also served as a model for many other German football managers, ranging from Jürgen Klopp (Liverpool) and Thomas Tuchel (Chelsea) to Julian Nagelsmann (Bayern Munich) and Hansi Flick (Germany).

They have all commended Rangnick’s style and adapted his system to great success.

Rangnick’s last job as manager was with RB Leipzig in 2019 before he became the head of sports and development for the Russian Premier League’s Lokomotive Moscow.

However, Rangnick prefers to be a consultant as that was the condition he set before signing up with the English Premier League team.

Now it’s a game of waiting to see if the Red Devils will regain their glory in the six months under Rangnick before he passes the torch on to the next manager. The Professor is, however, expected to continue pulling the strings behind the scenes.

Denice Zamboanga Picks Close Friend Stamp Fairtex to Beat Ritu Phogat in Grand Prix Final #SootinClaimon.Com

Top-ranked ONE Championship women’s atomweight Denice “Lycan Queen” Zamboanga is picking her close friend and former training partner Stamp Fairtex to beat India’s Ritu Phogat in the ONE Women’s Atomweight World Grand Prix Championship Final.

Stamp and Phogat lock horns in the tournament’s final round, which goes down at ONE: Winter Warriors from the Singapore Indoor Stadium on Friday, 3 December.

“This final round is very exciting, because Stamp is there and obviously she’s my friend. She’s one of the most amazing and most dangerous strikers in the division. Ritu is very good with her wrestling,” Zamboanga said in a recent interview with ONE Championship.

“It’s hard to call this bout, if Stamp dominates Ritu in the striking department and keeps this fight from hitting the mats, I think she’s going to win hands down. She has great takedown defense and her ground game is very well developed. And I’m maybe a little biased here but I think Stamp wins this fight because she’s a more complete fighter.”

Zamboanga and Stamp previously trained together when they were teammates at the Fairtex Training Center in Pattaya. There, they formed a bond and friendship that would extend far beyond the cage.

“Lycan Queen” has since left Fairtex to join Marrok Force in Bangkok, but the two remain close friends.

“I know Stamp and I know she’s really hungry. She is really determined to win this thing, and I know she’s giving it her all. I know Ritu is too, but I’ve trained with Stamp and I know she has that unwavering will to win,” Zamboanga said.

The winner of the ONE Women’s Atomweight World Grand Prix Championship Final will, of course, earn the right to challenge division queen “Unstoppable” Angela Lee for the ONE Women’s Atomweight World Title.

Zamboanga couldn’t be more excited for her friend, who is one step closer to realizing her dream of becoming a three-sport world champion.

“I know how dedicated she is to this. She’s been working so hard, and I just think it will be hard for Ritu to deny Stamp. Stamp is also the more well-rounded fighter, so we’ll see,” Zamboanga said.

“We’re finally going to see who comes out on top of this Grand Prix, and who will get to challenge Angela Lee for the ONE Women’s Atomweight World Title.”

ONE: Winter Warriors will also see the return of ONE Lightweight Kickboxing World Champion Regian Eersel, who defends his title against Islam Murtazaev. Meanwhile, Chinese kickboxing star Qiu Jianliang makes his ONE Championship debut against Hiroki Akimoto of Japan.

Stamp Fairtex Fires Back at Ritu Phogat: “I’m not scared of her at all” #SootinClaimon.Com

Former two-sport ONE World Champion Stamp Fairtex recently responded to Ritu Phogat’s claim that the Thai warrior showed fear during their staredown at ONE: Empower.

Stamp, the #2-ranked atomweight contender, believes it’s Phogat who is afraid of what’s to come.

“I do respect Ritu, she is a great fighter. She’s great at what she does, which is wrestling. I’m great at what I have, which is Muay Thai. That being said, I’m not scared of her at all. It’s quite the opposite,” Stamp said in a recent interview with ONE Championship.

“I have full confidence in my skills, so I don’t know what she’s talking about. To me, it’s more like whoever imposes their will in this fight is going to take home the victory.”

Stamp and has traded barbs with Phogat, the #4-ranked atomweight contender, for the past few weeks leading up to their highly anticipated showdown. The two are scheduled to square off in the ONE Women’s Atomweight World Grand Prix Championship Final, set for ONE: Winter Warriors on Friday, December 3.

“I think Ritu has to be concerned with my striking and all of my weapons. That’s why she’s going to try to take me down the first chance she gets,” Stamp said.

“I have to keep this a long-range fight. But in case she successfully takes me to the canvas, I’ll be ready. I’ve worked a lot on my takedown defense in training too.”

The Stamp-Phogat showdown offers the classic striker versus grappler dynamic, which many fans love. However, this fight could go to who wants it more, or whoever can impose their game plan.

Stamp, for the most part, remains confident she can handle Phogat on the ground. Phogat is an Indian wrestling champion who has used her mat skills to dominate so far in her time in ONE Championship.

That being said, Stamp believes in her skills enough to think the can hang with Phogat on the mat, if the fight hits the canvas.

“I would say my ground game is constantly improving each time I fight. It has been five years since I started training, and I never thought I’d get this far. Now to be in the Grand Prix finals, I’m even more confident of my grappling skills,” Stamp said.

“I just want to get better everyday, and that’s what I’m focused on. For this fight in particular, I’ve given extra focus on defending her wrestling. I think a lot of the fans will be surprised.”

Stamp and Phogat lock horns in the highly anticipated ONE Women’s Atomweight World Grand Prix Championship Final at ONE: Winter Warriors, which broadcasts live from the Singapore Indoor Stadium on Friday, December 3.

The winner will earn the right to face ONE Women’s Atomweight World Champion Angela Lee when the Singaporean superstar returns sometime in 2022.
