WASHINGTON – President Joe Biden said Thursday that his administration is “considering” a diplomatic boycott of the Winter Olympics in China, a move that would allow U.S. athletes to compete but keep government officials from attending the Games in Beijing to protest Chinas human rights abuses.

Biden says U.S. considering diplomatic boycott of Winter Olympics in China

Democratic and Republican lawmakers, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., have advocated for such a boycott.

Biden said a diplomatic boycott is “something we are considering” as he responded to questions from reporters during a meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Biden has faced pressure to deny Chinese President Xi Jinping the prestige that comes from playing host to global leaders at one of the biggest sporting events in the world. The Games open in early February.

As early as two weeks after Biden was inaugurated, diplomats began private discussions with allies about how to handle the Olympics. Former officials as well as lawmakers were uneasy about the thought of American athletes and dignitaries taking part in a ceremony in China’s capital while more than a million Uyghurs are imprisoned in camps in the country’s northwest.

On Thursday, after Biden’s statements, Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., who is rumored to be mulling a run for president, said that the administration should implement a full boycott of the Olympics – “No athletes. No administration officials. No corporate sponsors” – and that a diplomatic boycott was “the least, the absolute bare minimum, that any civilized nation would do.”

Beijing has been accused of genocide by the U.S. government for its treatment of Uyghur Muslims in the Xinjiang region and been heavily criticized for cracking down on democracy advocates in Hong Kong, among other things. In recent days, the international athletic community has raised concerns about Chinese tennis player Peng Shuai, a two-time Grand Slam champion in doubles, who reportedly has not been heard from since she accused a high-ranking Chinese political figure of sexual assault.

In the past 10 months, Biden has tried to deftly manage U.S.-China relations, speaking up when the Chinese violate international norms or disregard human rights while seeking to avoid outright conflict.

Biden has repeatedly framed U.S. actions at home and abroad as a democratic counterpoint to autocratic and authoritarian nations like Russia and China, which he has described as a U.S. competitor, not an adversary.

As he faced questions this year about the withdrawal from Afghanistan, ending a two-decade-long war, he said China and Russia would love to see the United States still pouring resources into that country. And this week, bragging about the $1.2 trillion infrastructure plan he signed Monday, the president said the investment will make the United States more competitive on the world stage. “For example, because of this law, next year will be the first year in 20 years that American infrastructure investment will grow faster than China’s.”

Later, he framed the bill signing in historic terms.

Biden and Xi engaged in a 3½-hour virtual meeting on Monday night. But White House press secretary Jen Psaki said the topic of the Olympics and the attendance of U.S. diplomats did not come up.

During a news briefing shortly after Biden’s comments, Psaki said that the White House has “serious concerns about the human rights abuses we’ve seen” in China and that there are “a range of factors as we look at what our presence would be” at the Olympics.

But Psaki said that she had no update beyond what Biden had relayed and that she wants to “leave the president the space to make decisions.” She offered no timeline for announcing a decision.

Earlier this week, Washington Post opinion columnist Josh Rogin reported that the White House is expected to announce that neither Biden nor any other U.S. government officials will attend the Games.

Among the Republicans advocating a diplomatic boycott is Sen. Mitt Romney, Utah, who was the president and chief executive officer of the Salt Lake Organizing Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in 2002.

In a New York Times essay earlier this year, he wrote that American athletes should compete in China but that American spectators, diplomats and executives “should stay at home.”

“Limiting spectators, selectively shaping our respective delegations and refraining from broadcasting Chinese propaganda would prevent China from reaping many of the rewards it expects from the Olympics,” Romney wrote.

Hua Hin Hope Prom Fires 8 Birdies to Lead at Black Mountain #SootinClaimon.Com

Hometown-hope Prom Meesawat produced the low round 64 to build a three shot lead after the third round of the BT3 million Thailand Mixed hosted by TrustGolf at the Black Mountain Golf Club in Hua Hin on Thursday.

The 37-year-old Hua Hin-based crafted eight birdies, five at the back nine, to finish the day without a bogey. His total of 16 under-par-200 propelled him to the final with a three-stroke advantage over halfway leader Noppalit Panichphol and female contender Trichat Cheenglab, each with 13 under.

“I finally gained my momentum today. I hit the ball the way I wanted to which made it easier for me to shoot scores,” said Prom who shared the title with his close friend Chapchai Nirat in the second Thailand Mixed event in Chiang Mai back in April. “I feel good about every part of my game. Even I made some mistake on the ninth hole, I still fought my way back to save par,” said Prom whose  64 was the round’s best. It earned him Bt30,000 sponsored by Bond Holdings.

But a more lucrative cheque of Bt450,000 awaits him on Friday should he prevail in the tournament. He will then become the first player to win for the second time in the mixed tournament.

“I hope to carry the momentum going to the final. If I can play consistently like I did today, I will have a great chance on Friday,” said Prom in the hunt for his second trophy of the season.

After hitting back-to-back 66s, rookie Nopparat Panichphol struggled with his game on Thursday, shooting four bogeys against an eagle on the sixth hole and three birdies before ending up with a 71.

“The winds made it difficult for me. I had a hard time playing my second shots which deprived me of the chance to shoot scores,” said the 23-year-old rookie in search for his maiden professional title.

“I need to six my tee shots and get used to the winds. Besides, if I can fix my second shots, I should hit more birdies tomorrow,” the former Thailand Amateur champion said.

Trichat still remains the best female performer for the third day. She hit a 70 to remain in contention.

“I didn’t hit four under like I expected. It was very windy out there which made it difficult to aim for the flag positions. But hitting two under was not so bad,” said the 26-year-old Bangkokian who has no problem playing in the last group alongside the men (Prom and Nopparat).

“Playing in the same group with Prom and Nopparat will be a good opportunity for me. I will try to learn their aggressive and defensive games and apply them on the women’s tour,” said Trichat, winner on the Thai LPGA Tour last month.

Following four shots behind the lead were two in-form stars Sadom Kaewkanjana and the first circuit’s winner Arpichaya Yubol, each with a 69 and 204s.

Apart from the prize money, a cheque of Bt30,000 sponsored by Bond Holdings will be awarded to a player with the best score each day. Also, 200 gift sets by S.Khonkaen will be given away to all players in the first day.

Dark-horse Nopparat maintains lead after 36 holes at 4th Thailand Mixed #SootinClaimon.Com

Rookie Nopparat Panichphol shot his successive 66 to hold on to the lead after the halfway stage in the fourth circuit of the BT3 million Thailand Mixed hosted by TrustGolf at the Black Mountain Golf Club in Hua Hin on Wednesday.

The unfancied player proceeded through 34 holes without an error before he committed his first bogey on the eighth hole (starting at the back nine) and ended the second round on 12 under-par-132, a stroke ahead of two-time Thai LPGA Tour winner Trichat Cheenglab.

“It was still a pretty good round for me even though I needed three putts on the eighth hole. The ball hit the edge of the hole but didn’t sink in,” said the 23-year-old from Sa Gaeo whose latest win came in the 2017 Thailand Amateur Championship in Bangkok.

The former national player will now head into the third round in a pro event for the first time. Despite his restricted experience, Nopparat believes he has what it takes to have a breakthrough victory this week.

“I have long drives and I’m confident with my putters at the moment. I will focus on my game, trying to shoot scores at all par five holes. If I can hit 5-6 under a day, I stand a good shot at winning,” added the gold medallist in the 2017 SEA Games.

In terms of the mental strength, Nopparat is also confident he can handle the pressure of playing in the last group on Thursday.

“I used to make the gold medal putt which helped Thailand win the SEA Games men’s team (2017) before. So, I believe, to some extent, I can deal with a tough situation well. What I need to do is to focus on myself and care less about other players,” he added.

26-year-old Trichat, winner of the Thai LPGA Tour event in Petchaburi last month, was hot on her heels as she shot seven birdies without a bogey for a second round 65. She sat a shot back with a total 11 under-par-133.

“I hit the iron well and made a lot of birdies from around 3-5 feet. I came here without much expectation as I’m exhausted from playing week in week out. It turns out that I play better when I have less stress,” said the 26-year-old woman from Bangkok.

“I hope to hit 4 under in each of the next two rounds. If I can achieve that, it will be beyond my goal,” she added.

Coming at lone third was Pathompon Fuengsawat following a 65 which featured seven birdies, an eagle on the 17th hole and two bogeys. He had to play 24 holes on Wednesday as bad visuality suspended play in round one.

“I had to stop in the first round with six holes to play. But I still kept my momentum going into the second round. The greens here are in perfect condition which really suits me. About my game plan tomorrow, I hope to hit one short at a time, trying the hit a lot of fairways and hope to make good putts,” said Pathompon with a total 134.

Former champion Arpichaya Yubol and hot-shot Sadom Kaewkanjana, who won four titles in his last five starts,  proved why they are ones to watch after the first shot a 66 and the latter a 65 to fall three shots behind the lead on nine under-par-135.

A total 65 players have made it to the third round with a cut at one over-par-145.

International Olympic Committee will no longer determine transgender athlete eligibility by testosterone levels #SootinClaimon.Com

#SootinClaimon.Com : ขอบคุณแหล่งข้อมูล : หนังสือพิมพ์ The Nation.

https://www.nationthailand.com/life/40008906

The International Olympic Committee is moving away from a focus on individual testosterone levels in transgender and intersex athletes as a way of determining those athletes eligibility for competition.

In new guidelines for inclusion on the basis of gender identity, the IOC is encouraging policies that require evidence that transgender athletes have a competitive advantage. In guidance released Tuesday, the IOC pushes responsibility for making gender policies to the global governing bodies of individual sports, while offering to give those organizations assistance in creating fair rules.

The new directives replace a 2015 IOC policy that demanded transgender and intersex athletes have testosterone levels below a certain threshold, measured through a testing process that could be damaging to the athletes.

“Every athlete has the right to practice sport without discrimination and in a way that respects their health, safety and dignity,” the new guidelines state. “At the same time the credibility of competitive sport – and particularly high-level sporting competitions – relies on a level playing field where no athlete has an unfair or disproportionate advantage over the rest.”

At this past summer’s Tokyo Games, weightlifter Laurel Hubbard became the first openly transgender female athlete to compete in the Olympics.

IOC officials said they hoped the new guidelines will allow sports to tailor their gender eligibility policies in more equitable ways. They said that in studying the ways to update the IOC’s six-year-old policy, they discovered that many sports federations were devising their own rules for gender eligibility.

“This is guidance; it’s not an absolute rule,” said Richard Budgett, the IOC’s medical and scientific director.

The new policy asks sports organizations to look at a number of factors, including inclusion, prevention of harm and fairness when making their rules. But the biggest seemed to be backing away from testosterone limits.

“It’s important we broaden the evidence base,” Budgett said. “There is some interesting research that needs to come to conclusion and that will give us much more information about performance, which is the issue which is really key to determining eligibility.”

The IOC hopes to start holding workshops with sports organizations next March, right after the end of the Beijing Winter Olympics.

Unfancied Nopparat takes surprise clubhouse lead at Black Mountain #SootinClaimon.Com

Former SEA Games gold medallist Nopparat Panichphol produced an unblemished opening round 66 to take the clubhouse’s lead in the fourth circuit of the BT3 million Thailand Mixed hosted by TrustGolf at the Black Mountain Golf Club in Hua Hin on Tuesday.

The 23-year-old player generated three birdies on the front nine and added three more at the turn to capture the lead for the first time in a professional tournament. He had already completed his round in the morning before play was suspended for 1.40 hours in the afternoon due to lightning.

“This is beyond expectation. I was quite excited,” said Nopparat who helped Thailand win the 2017 SEA Games men’s team event. “Actually, I didn’t start well as I hit my driving shot to the woods on the first hole and to the roughs on the second. But I was able to make crucial par putts that really boosted up my confidence.” added Nopparat who just turned professional at the beginning of the year.

“My plan is not to  hit to the roughs. It will be a bit tough on Wednesday as I will start in the afternoon when the condition will be very windy. I have to stay away from the obstacles, hit the fairways and make some great putts,” the rookie said.

Also enjoying a bogey free day was 34-year-old Suttijet Kooratanapisan who followed a shot behind the leader after shooting five birdies for a 67 at the par 72 7,246-yard landscape for the men (6,303 yards for the women).

“I’m happy with the way I hit the iron to create a lot of opportunities out there. I just didn’t make some putts as the lies here are tough to read. I will try to remain focused tomorrow and capitalize on my opportunities more,” said the man  from Ratchaburi.

Rounding the top three was a female player Trichat Cheenglab whose round of 68 was highlighted by an eagle on the 13th hole, four birdies and two bogeys.

“My putts really helped me out there. I made a lot of five-foot birdies,” said the 26-year-old Trichat who was in the same group with former Thai No 1 Thammanoon Sriroj.

“Playing with Thammanoon is a great experience from me. I’ve got to learn his short game. As for my goal this week, I hope to hit three under every day and shoot scores on par five holes,” Trichat said.

Several players, each with a 69, shared the fourth position. Among them were first circuit champion Arpichaya Yubol, the only female victor, and Chonlada Chayanun, who won the latest Thai LPGA Tour event two weeks ago.

Red-hot Sadom Kaewkanjana who has won four out of his latest five tournaments started with a 70, four shots off the lead.

“I hit good tee shots but didn’t make my putts. I just missed them a little bit here and there. I think I will get used to the course condition more tomorrow and play better,” said the 23-year-old from Narathiwat.

Play was suspended due to bad light with many players having yet to finish their rounds. First round actions will resume on Wednesday’s morning, followed by the second round.

Tenshin Nasukawa Plans Final Kickboxing Match in 2022, Wants Rodtang Rematch #SootinClaimon.Com

Japanese kickboxing superstar Tenshin Nasukawa is fast-approaching the last kickboxing match of his young career.

As of October 2021, the 23-year-old fighting sensation is the current No. 1 ranked flyweight and super flyweight kickboxer, as well as the No. 1 ranked pound-for-pound kickboxer on the planet by Combat Press.

He began his career as an amateur in 2008, at the ripe young age of 10. 13 years later, he’s one of the best fighters in the world. Nasukawa even fought boxing legend Floyd Mayweather Jr. in an exhibition match in December of 2018.

It goes without saying, Nasukawa has a litany of awards and achievements on his fight resume.

That being said, Nasukawa made headlines recently when he announced that he would be pursuing a career in professional boxing. Boxing is the premiere combat sport in the world, and the most financially impactful at that, beating that of even MMA. So it makes total sense that Nasukawa, now 23, is heading to boxing at a relatively young age.

The Japanese athlete has years of competition left at the elite levels.

In a recent report by gongkaku.jp however, Nasukawa said his last kickboxing fight will take place at RISE’s event on April 2, 2022, at the Yoyogi National Gymnasium at Yoyogi Park in Shibuya. And he has just the dance partner to ride off into the sunset with — reigning ONE Championship Flyweight Muay Thai World Champion Rodtang “The Iron Man” Jitmuangnon.

Nasukawa and Rodtang fought back in 2018, with the Chiba native battling the Thai warrior to a draw after five grueling rounds. Because of the close nature of the fight, and extra round was administered, and Nasukawa eventually took home a close but controversial decision victory.

Nasukawa is still signed to RISE, while Rodtang has a firm grasp of the flyweight division in ONE Championship’s all-striking super league, ONE Super Series. But both men have said they want this rematch, and it’s a great one to put together for the fans.

Rodtang is currently set to fight MMA legend Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson in a four-round Muay Thai and MMA mixed-rules matchup.

The fight was initially scheduled for 5 December in Singapore at ONE Championship’s 10th anniversary show, ONE X. But due to the rising cases of COVID-19 in the country, the event was postponed to early next year.

Hot-shot Sadom Kaewkanjana and inaugural champion Arpichaya Yubol will tee off at the Black Mountain Golf Club as the heavy favourites as the fourth circuit of the BT3 million Thailand Mixed hosted by TrustGolf kicks off on Tuesday in Hua Hin.

All eyes will be on the 23-year-old Sadom who has won four out of his last five events including the Singha Classic in Nakhon Nayok on Sunday.  The in-form player hopes to continue his formidable performance at the mixed event, his tune-up for two Asian Tour tournaments in Phuket between November and December.

“I’ve been in great form, coming from a victory on the All Thailand Golf Tour last week,” said Sadom, the hottest Thai player at the moment. “It’s good to play a mixed event for a change. My goal this week is to make the cut first,” the Narathiwat-based said.

Sadom will try to benefit from his familiarity with the 7,246-yard landscape where he trained with the national team for the 2017 SEA Games in which  he won the team’s event.

“You have to serve well and come up with some solid game on the greens. I will try to go out there and enjoy playing golf,” said Sadom who is currently on top of the ATGT Order of Merits’ standings with a total Bt2,3,82,100 prize money.

Arpichaya who beat Atthaya Thitikul by a stroke to win the inaugural edition at this course back in February admitted that she had to carry a load of pressure over her shoulders in her return to the Black Mountain which measures 6,303 yards off the women’s tees.

“People say I won here before and expect a lot from me. But they have to understand that no one can keep winning or finishing in the top five in every tournament,” said Arpichaya who has bagged three crowns in 2021. That included two back-to-back wins on the Thai LPGA Tour in October.

“I don’t want to set a goal too high this week. I’d rather be here to learn from the guys  especially Sadom who has won four titles in as many weeks. I want to know how he plays to keep winning like that,” said the 18-year-old and 2018 Thai LPGA Tour No 1 player.

Meanwhile in the qualifying competition on Monday, rookie Parathakorn Suyasri fired an eagle on the 13th hole and five birdies against three bogeys for the best score of 68. The 21-year-old who just turned professional last week and other 21 qualifiers earned their spots in the first round which kicks off on Tuesday.

“I tried not to think that I’ve already turned pro as I don’t want to get under pressure. I’m actually trying to adjust  my swing and cannot expect too much this week. My game plan is to hit the iron well and hit as many fairways as possible,” Parathakorn said.

A total of 144 players will be in actions in the fourth edition of the Thailand Mixed event scheduled between November 16-19. After 36 holes, the top 60 players and ties will proceed to the weekend rounds while the winner will walk away with the lucrative prize money of Bt450,000.
