Former LPGA member Sherman Santiwiwatthanaphong got off to a great start in the second circuit of the Bt2.5 million “SAT-TWT Open” Road to World Ranking following an unblemished round of 66 at the Phoenix Gold Golf and Country Club in Chonburi on Wednesday.

The 24-year-old player whose best finish on the LPGA was at tied seventh in the 2018 Kingsmill Championship produced four birdies plus an eagle on the ninth hole to become the opening round lone leader at the par 72 6,328 yard layout.

“I didn’t use my driver today but I did pretty well with my iron No 3 on the tee shots,” said Sherman who won a local tournament in Hua Hin in late September. “However, I still wasn’t happy with my game as there were some erratic shots that I needed to fix. I have to work on my drive and fix something on my swing,” added the player from Bueng Kan province.

Despite her good start, Sherman did not want to aim too high this week as she prefers to take one round at a time.

“My goal for every tournament is to stay focused and stick to my routine. I normally don’t eye on a particular position in a tournament. I’d rather focus on producing high percentage shots,” added Sherman who has been playing at the Phoenix Gold for 7 years.

Following a stroke behind was the up-and-coming Chanettee Wannasaen after the 18-year-old player fired seven birdies (holes No 2-4, 9, 12 , 14 and 16) against two bogeys (holes No 5 and 13).

“It was a good round based on the way I putted. In fact, I was putting poorly coming to this tournament. I’m happy to get my momentum back even I should have shot lower score,” said the teenage star from Chiang Mai who finished runner-up in the previous TWT event at the Lake View Resort and Golf Club in Petchaburi two months ago.

“Hitting five under par isn’t so bad. I hope to make more putts in the next two days,” added Chanettee who won the qualifying event of the LPGA Thailand earlier this year.

Red-hot Arpichaya Yubol who has bagged three titles this season (two local tours and one Thailand Mixed event) hit seven birdies against three bogeys for an opening 68 to land at lone third.

The second stop of the SAT-TWT Open which offers a total prize money of Bt2.5 million is  held under strict protocols by the province and the government against COVID-19 which must be respected by players, guests and tournament’s officials. Players and officials must produce negative results of their Swap Test or ATK within 72 hours on the registration day in order to take part in the competition. Furthermore, players and their company must receive at least two doses of vaccines against COVID-19.

The SAT-TWT Open is a stroke play tournament of 54 holes (18 for each round). An approximate number of 114 players are to compete in 36 holes with the top 60 moving forward to the final round. The winner will be rewarded with a handsome cheque of Bt367,500.

“We considered flying to China and we analyzed all the pros and cons. However, it’s logistically complicated for us as we would need a charter from Frankfurt, Germany. Acclimatization in China won’t be a problem as every member of the team knows how to prepare for the competition,” Jan Winkiel, general secretary of the Polish Ski Association, explained in an interview for local TV on Monday.

“In December there will be completely different temperatures, humidity, winds and so on (compared to February). It’s a challenge for us to compete on the hill which we didn’t test, but the other teams are in a similar situation,” Winkiel concluded.

Stamp Fairtex and Ritu Phogat Advance to ONE Women’s Atomweight World Grand Prix Championship Final With Impressive Wins at ONE: NEXTGEN #SootinClaimon.Com

ONE Championship™ (ONE) returned to the Singapore Indoor Stadium with ONE: NEXTGEN, which aired live on Friday, 29 October. The event featured a pair of explosive kickboxing matchups, an action-packed heavyweight mixed martial arts showdown, a rematch between two fierce strawweights, and the semifinal round of the historic ONE Women’s Atomweight World Grand Prix.

In the main event, former two-sport ONE World Champion and current #3-ranked atomweight contender Stamp Fairtex showcased superior striking technique, keeping Grand Prix alternate Julie Mezabarba at the end of her kicking range for three full rounds to take home a unanimous decision victory.

Stamp controlled the distance early in the first round, forcing Mezabarba on the defensive with a plethora of kicks and hard feints. The Brazilian tried to close the gap in the second, even landing a takedown, but Stamp executed a beautiful sweep and wound up in full mount. The Thai then battered Mezabarba with a series of sharp elbows from top position.

In the final round, Mezabarba charged forward with punching combinations, but Stamp wisely used the full length of the Circle to keep her opponent at bay. With the victory, Stamp moves on to the ONE Women’s Atomweight World Grand Prix Championship Final.

In the co-main event, #4-ranked atomweight contender Ritu Phogat overcame a spirited effort from Grand Prix alternate Jenelyn Olsim to win by unanimous decision in the semifinal round of the ONE Women’s Atomweight World Grand Prix. Olsim initially used her striking to keep Phogat at range, but “The Indian Tigress” quickly turned to her world-class wrestling and gained control. Phogat began the second round with an emphatic slam and then took Olsim to the mat at will. The Filipina kept it interesting by attacking constantly with submission attempts off her back, but Phogat was relentless with her chain wrestling and earned the victory on the judges’ scorecards. With the win, Phogat advances to the tournament final.

Highly decorated kickboxing champion Iraj Azizpour made a triumphant ONE Championship debut, beating Anderson “Braddock” Silva by unanimous decision after three back-and-forth rounds. Azizpour made his power known early, knocking down Silva with a high left kick that clipped him on the temple in the first stanza. Silva survived and made it a more competitive fight in the second, turning up his offense while Azizpour kept coming forward. The third frame was close, but Azizpour was able to take the victory on the judges’ scorecards.

In a showdown of undefeated heavyweights, Kirill Grishenko left it all in the Circle, punishing ONE Championship debutant Dustin Joynson across three grueling rounds to win a hard-fought unanimous decision. Grishenko took full command with his wrestling, bringing Joynson to the ground and keeping him pinned down in the first round. The Belarusian lit up Joynson on the feet in the second, connecting with a series of spinning backfists and elbows. Joynson came alive in the third but couldn’t close the gap as Grishenko ran away with the victory.

Jeremy Miado put on a masterful striking performance, stopping Miao Li Tao once again to punctuate their strawweight rivalry in a highly anticipated rematch. Miado came out guns blazing in the first round, pummeling Miao with cracking right hands while maintaining distance with his jab. Action continued in the second, but a fierce barrage of punches ended matters abruptly, earning Miado a spectacular technical knockout victory.

A thrilling ONE Super Series kickboxing contest ensued when light heavyweights Beybulat Isaev and Bogdan Stoica met in the Circle. After a closely contested first round, Stoica connected on a huge right hand that sent Isaev crashing to the canvas in the second. Isaev returned the favor in the third frame, forcing Stoica to take a knee from a crushing body shot. In the end, all three judges scored the bout in favor of Isaev to win by unanimous decision.
