Athletes who hope to compete for Team USA in the Winter Olympics and Paralympics in Beijing next year will be required to be fully vaccinated against the coronavirus under a new policy announced by the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee.

U.S. athletes competing in Beijing must be fully vaccinated by Nov. 1 or obtain a medical or religious exemption by then, the organization’s website states. The requirement applies to team staff members who use the organization’s facilities and training centers as well. The Olympics begin Feb. 4 – less than six months after the end of the Summer Games – and the Paralympics start March 4. The new mandate extends to all who plan or hope to be part of Team USA’s delegation, who must show proof of vaccination or be granted an exemption by Dec. 1. In addition, the mitigation and protocols set for Tokyo’s Summer Games will remain in place.

The USOPC said in July that around 83% of the 613 American competitors in the Tokyo Olympics were vaccinated, but there was no requirement. The International Olympic Committee has not announced whether vaccination will be a requirement for non-U.S. athletes in Beijing, and its first playbook on health and other matters is expected next month.

“The stark reality is that this pandemic is far from over,” Sarah Hirschland, the USOPC’s CEO, wrote in a letter obtained by The Washington Post. “This step will increase our ability to create a safe and productive environment for Team USA athletes and staff, and allow us to restore consistency in planning, preparation and service to athletes.”

Roughly 240 athletes will compete in Beijing. In the days before and during the Tokyo Games, 28 athletes tested positive; the Paralympics had 13 positive tests. Golfer Bryson DeChambeau and swimmer Michael Andrew said before the Summer Games that they had not been vaccinated and DeChambeau missed the Games, testing positive just before flying to Japan. Andrew said he previously had covid-19.

The policy goes a step beyond those of North America’s major pro teams, which do not require athletes to be vaccinated to compete.

ONE Championship made headlines in 2020 when it signed mixed martial arts legend Vitor Belfort. Plenty of amazing matchups awaited “The Phenom” in the Singapore-based martial arts promotion.

Unfortunately, things didn’t exactly pan out for either side, and Belfort never got to compete in the Circle. ONE CEO Chatri Sityodtong cleared the air on the Vitor situation in a recent interview on The MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani.

“Vitor [Belfort] and I are still quite close, we chat on WhatsApp. I wished him good luck for his fight with [Oscar] De La Hoya. And then the next day he switched to Evander [Holyfield]. But I’m super happy for Vitor,” Sityodtong said.

“In a nutshell, Vitor joined ONE and we had this big vision that he was going to still be fighting in his prime. And I think he realized that he wanted these special fights. We wanted to put kind of a young lion – old lion storylines. We just could never see eye to eye.”

Belfort has since moved on, and is now competing in lucrative celebrity-type boxing matches. He knocked out former heavyweight boxing champion Evander Holyfield via first-round TKO last weekend, and he’s already called out Jake Paul.

“There was just a mismatch in terms of what he wanted and what we wanted, and we tried. Both sides tried really hard. He offered a lot of different opponents. We offered a lot of different opponents and we just never came together,” Sityodtong said.

“It was like ‘Chatri, I want to go,’ you know I don’t want to stop you. But I left the door open. I said, ‘look, Vitor, if you want to work with us again, no problem.’ I personally have a very strong relationship with Vitor.”

Sityodtong wished Belfort well and even threw out some names he would love to see “The Phenom” face.

“Vitor has a vision which is panning out, which is phenomenal. Hopefully, he fights Anderson Silva or he fights [Mike] Tyson or whoever’s next,” Sityodtong said.

ONE Championship returns on Friday, 24 September with ONE: REVOLUTION, live from the Singapore Indoor Stadium. Christian Lee defends his ONE Lightweight World Title against Ok Rae Yoon in the main event.

Standing areas could return to Premier League and Championship League clubs stadiums next year should be approved after safety scrutiny, more than two decades after the Hillsborough disaster in 1989.

Premier League and Championship League clubs could apply for licensed safe standing to the trial return of standing areas at football grounds, announced Sports Grounds Safety Authority (SGSA) on Wednesday.

SGSA, the British government’s advisor on safety at sports grounds, confirmed that football clubs in the top two tiers will have until October 6 to submit an application to it. If approved, these clubs will be able to offer licensed standing areas from January 1, 2022.

“The licensed standing areas will be independently evaluated from their introduction in January for the remainder of the 2021/22 season.  Other parts of the ground will remain all-seated and fans will be expected to sit in these areas,” read a statement released by the SGSA.

After the Hillsborough disaster in 1989 which cost the lives of 97 Liverpool fans, the stadiums in English football’s top two leagues have been requiring to be all-seaters since 1994.

“We know many fans want the choice to stand and, with the advent of new engineering solutions, our research has shown how this can be managed safely,” said Martyn Henderson, Chief Executive of the SGSA. “Today’s announcement will enable us to properly test and evaluate licensed standing areas before the government decides its next steps.”

Clubs will have to meet a number of criteria in order to receive approval to have licensed standing areas. For example, seats with barriers or independent barriers must be in both home and away sections. Fans must be able to sit or stand in the licensed area. There must also be one seat or space per person.

Thailand have a chance to make history at the 2021 FIFA Futsal World Cup on Thursday. A win for the Thais in the round of 16 would send them through to their first ever quarterfinal after five appearances in the tournament.

This is the third consecutive time Thailand have advanced to the round of 16 at the quadrennial tournament, but they were eliminated at this stage in 2012 and 2016.

On Sunday, the Thais finished third in Group C after crushing the Solomon Islands 9-4 in their final group-stage match in Lithuania. The win earned them a match in the knockout phase against Group A winners Kazakhstan. The match kicks off on Thursday at 9.30pm, Thai time.

The Thai team have already created history at this year’s tournament in Lithuania. Head coach Rakphol Sainetngam became the first Thai coach to manage the team and advance to the round of 16 at the FIFA Futsal World Cup.

Victor Hermans from the Netherlands coached the team at the 2012 tournament in Thailand, then Miguel Rodrigo of Spain succeeded him for the 2016 edition in Colombia.

Thailand beaten by Portugal in futsal World Cup

Thailand have advanced to the round of 16 in 2012, 2016 and this year and now only need to win one match to rewrite the history books.

Suphawut Thueanklang is the top scorer for Thailand in the FIFA Futsal World Cup, with 12 goals from his appearances in 2012, 2016 and 2021. Suphawut is also the first Thai to score a hat-trick twice in the tournament – in 2016 and 2021. He completed that feat in Sunday’s game against the Solomon Islands. Thailand’s deadliest marksman will now be aiming to add more goals to his record against Kazakhstan on Thursday.

Meanwhile, Suphawut, Jetsada Chudech, Kritsada Wongkaeo, and Jirawat Sornwichian have scored for Thailand in all three of the team’s FIFA Futsal World Cup appearances.

Four other players have appeared in all three tournaments for Thailand – Anucha Munjarern, Panuwat Janta, Narongsak Khongkaew and Lertchai Issarasuwipakorn.

All have led the team to the knockout stage three times and can now create history on Thursday by winning a place in the quarterfinal.

On Sunday, Suphawut was among Thai players who donated clothes and equipment to the Solomon Islands team, who are made up of impoverished semi-professionals.

Thai vs Kazakhstan head-to-head record
Though Kazakhstan is in Central Asia, the country’s football federation is a member of UEFA (Union of European Football Associations). Thailand have played Kazakhstan three times before.
2000: Kazakhstan beat Thailand 4-3 in the 2000 AFC Futsal Championship in the group stage
2016: Thailand drew 3-3 against Kazakhstan in the 2016 Thailand Five’s (Kazakhstan went on to win the title)
2017: Kazakhstan beat Thailand 2-1 in the 2017 Thailand Five’s (Kazakhstan were runners-up in the tournament)

Kazakhstan are currently ranked seventh in the world, 11 places above Thailand in 18th.

Capitan Confident His First Title Defense Against Mehdi Zatout Ends With a KO #SootinClaimon.Com

ONE Bantamweight Kickboxing World Champion Capitan Petchyindee Academy wants to continue his hot run in ONE Championship with another sublime performance.

He makes the first defense of his title against Mehdi “Diamond Heart” Zatout at ONE: REVOLUTION, which broadcasts live from the Singapore Indoor Stadium on Friday, 24 September.

No one has come close to finding a gap in Capitan’s arsenal, and the Petchyindee Academy standout is certain that will remain the same when he faces Zatout in the Circle.

“I think it’s going to be a knockout. I just know it,” Capitan said.

“I’m much younger, powerful, and better than him. He [Zatout] will be a great opponent, but I’m confident I can get that knockout again.”

Zatout is a former WBC Muay Thai World Champion who has shared the stage with some of the sport’s all-time greats. Though he started as a boxer, the French-Algerian striker excelled in kickboxing, boasting a 77-39-1 career record.

Because of this, Capitan will not underestimate and is expecting a close fight.

“Mehdi may not be in the top five rankings in the bantamweight division, but he has shown around the world what his greatest strengths are,” he said.

“He is a very experienced fighter who has great punches, accurate striking, and a great level of concentration. I know it’s going to be a tough fight.”

A win against “Diamond Heart” would be the perfect way to end his 2021, setting up a fresh challenge next year — perhaps a battle against Nong-O Gaiyanghadao for the ONE Bantamweight Muay Thai World Champion.

But Capitan maintains he is laser focused on the task at hand, and not looking past his next opponent.

“I have no plans to challenge Nong-O as of yet. Right now, the only thing in my mind is my next fight and how I can continue defending my Bantamweight World Championship Belt in the future. The Muay Thai Championship belt is something that will take time. I’ll need to prepare myself properly, defeat fighters like Tawanchai, Rodlek, and Saemapetch before I can take on Nong-O,” Capitan said.

“It feels great to be back in action again, and I want to defend this belt for all my fans around the world. I just want to go on to the stage and put on a show!”

ONE: REVOLUTION broadcasts live from the Singapore Indoor Stadium on Friday, September 24. In the main event, reigning ONE Lightweight World Champion Christian “The Warrior” Lee defends his World Title against #3-ranked lightweight contender Ok Rae Yoon.

Petchdam Petchyindee Academy to Taiki Naito: ‘I don’t think his punches and kicks are as good as mine’ #SootinClaimon.Com

Former ONE Flyweight Muay Thai World Champion Petchdam Petchyindee Academy is fired up ahead of his battle against Taiki Naito.

On Friday, 24 September, the two world-class strikers will slug it out in a flyweight Muay Thai bout at ONE: REVOLUTION, which broadcasts live from the Singapore Indoor Stadium.

Petchdam was last seen in the Circle suffering a loss to longtime rival Rodtang “The Iron Man” Jitmuangnon in July of 2020.

It was a bitter pill to swallow for “The Baby Shark,” but instead of looking at it from a negative perspective, he thoroughly believes he has improved on his shortcomings. He wants to become a world champion again.

“I believe I needed more preparation and improvements, especially in the defensive part of my game,” the 23-year-old martial artist shared.

“I’ve learned a lot from that loss to Rodtang, and now I’m prepared to challenge for that belt once again after this fight. Competing in a World Title bout is still my goal.”

Against Naito, Petchdam faces a rough and tough Japanese foe. He’s already sized up Naito and identified his strengths and weaknesses.

“He has got a great speed, and that causes a lot of trouble for his opponents, and his strength when he competes in a kickboxing style is clear for all to see,” the Petchyindee Academy representative said.

“But If I were to look at his skills from a Muay Thai perspective, I don’t think his punches and kicks are as good as mine.”

Petchdam is no stranger to dominating opponents in the Circle, having sent three of his opponents to the canvas since his promotional debut in 2018. He plans to do the same to Naito and work his way back up to a title shot.

“I’m going to win either by knockout or decision, it depends on the situation,” he stated.

“My aim is to fight for the flyweight Muay Thai World Title one day, and hopefully have that title around my waist.”
